The internal audio systems in the PC's are inadequate for high quality work. You should get an external audio system that attaches via firewire or USB to your MAC. Then use balanced cables from the mixer to this audio interface. There are MANY different audio interfaces... Search the music equipment suppliers in the "recording" section of their catalog...

Appreciate the fast response, but needed your recommendations for specific products. I know there are MANY different audio interfaces. I probably didn't make the request clear enough.

There are so many devices and different prices... First choice is if you want to use USB or Firewire... If you can use USB I would go that way as you can probably use it with a friends PC as many PC's don't have firewire.

Exampls are Avid Pro Tools Mbox about $550 (higher end)

PreSonus FireStudio Mobile 10x6 About $300 advantage more inputs

Cakewalk UA-25EX USB Audio Interface about $250 lower end but they work two inputs only

M-Audio Fast Track Pro Mobile USB Audio/MIDI About $200

PreSonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System about $150

Lexicon Alpha USB Desktop Recording Studio about $60

Myself I have been using the Cakewalk units that I only paid $50 for as non-working parts only units from salvage and I repaired them and they work perfect.

Personus is used by many pros and as I said there are many prices and MOST do a pretty good job of recording. Since you have a mixer, you REALLY only need two channels... HOWEVER evaluate if you might want to multitrack in the future before going to only a two channel unit.

How can i get more volume on my onstage monitors thru my mackie 2404 vlz3 mixer or what is the proper way to connect the monitors

Without more information of your speakers and amps we can't really help you. The Mackie board puts out line-level signals and that should drive any connected amp or powered speaker to the full capability. Make sure you are using BALANCED interconnect lines either XLR or TRS cables. Use of TS unbalanced cables costs you 6 DB and also noise pickup. Make sure ALL your gear, amps, speakers etc are powered from a SINGLE receptacle or power conditioning module. Normally you will use the AUX outputs of the mixer by way of TRS cables or balanced lines in a snake to power amplifiers onstage which then connect to the stage monitors. If you have powered monitors the returns of the aux to the stage go to the powered monitors. A heavy duty extension cord brings power back from thee stage power to the mixer.

Hello, I have a Mackie 1604 VLZ Pro from 1995. It's 110 volts and I want to change it to 220 volts. Do I need to buy a new transformer? I don't want to us an external step-down...

The LEAST expensive thing to do is to buy an external stepdown transformer.
Here is a link:

The 100 Watt would be adequate... If you think you might need more you could have a reserve for other equipment... At around $8 USD I don't think you can beat that. The labor cost to change the internal transformer would cost many times what the external transformer costs, not to mention the cost on a new internal transformer.

I cant get my mackie 2404 VLZ3 to record any audio? I have the board setup to record from the master but no audio comes into my computer. What to do next?

check your cables, on some Mackie boards press the switch to enable master out, make sure the mute or cancle button is not pressed. i have a 2404 vlzpro mixer it's simular to yours, if you have any problems, you can call Mackie direct if the issue is not solved, it could be a bad button, fuse or slide controle, or even a fuse

Hello, Effects and EQ hook up problem

Many of those connections REQUIRE using TRS cables (stereo style) rather than TS cables (mono style). It is possible you have mixed the cables if it worked before.

Any cable plugged into an "insert" should be a TRS (tip-ring-sleeve) cable.

Look up these connections in your 1604 manual.

Ch. 10 does not work - Mackie 1604-VLZ PRO

Yes, the ribbon cable is the 1st thing I would check. You can check the ribbon like this: Disconnect said cable from the channels. Connect cable connector from a known good channel to the problem channel. If channel sounds the same trace a signal through the channel op-amps.

Hooking up powerd monitors to a Mackie 1604 VLZ3

Are you sending the main mix to the monitors or are you giving them their own mix? What about using the sub groups, use 1 for your monitor send.
