I have a new Canon EOS 400D. While trying to use the built in flash it is giving me Error 99 stating to replace the battery. I have cleaned the lens contact and the Date-Time CR2016 battery also but did not work. Please advice.

It may be that the contacts on the lens is dirty, follow the directions, by using a clean pencil eraser (I would also suggest to use alcohol and clean the contacts after using the eraser). Also to remove the date button battery and the other batteries, then turn on the camera (with all batteries removed). Then put the batteries back in.

Welcome to Fixya Err 99 could mean several different things, such as... Memory Card, Lens or Lens contacts.... Here's what you can try: Remove the memory card an enable "shooting with out memory card" and see if you still get the error. If it works your memory card is bad.Try another lens if you can. Clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser (be careful not to get eraser dust in the camera body or in the lens). Worst case scenario is, Err 99 could be related to the shutter failing which would mean a trip to Canon. Thank you

Be aware that the built in flash does not pop up automatically in all picture modes. Try it when in the different modes (on the mode dial) and see what I mean. Does it popo up when manually opened ?, (small button on front left hand side of the viewing pentaprism/flash housing.)
Can you pull it up manually, Be careful when doing this but try opening it manually, it is possible that the catch for the flash is just stuck temporarily.
See if Sigma has any updated advice on this. Otherwise, I don't mean to sound rude or harsh, but unfortunately you may be out of luck with the compatibility...you will need to get a Canon lens. Error 99 is just a communication error and cleaning the contacts is about all you can really do so if that hasn't worked...I'm sure this is not the news you want to hear, but contact Sigma if you haven't already and see what they say.
The camera is working again. I took out the battery, with the the on/off switch, off. I then swtiched the On/Off switch On. I then put the battery in ,and the camera turned on.It then gave me an ERROR 99. I then switch it off and on again, and it is still working.
You will get that error when using some lenses other than Canon. A lot of the older Sigma lenses have that issue. Do you get this error when using newer Canon EOS lenses?
