My 12 yr old Maytag top load washer was working beautifully until today. After the final rinse cycle before the final spin cycle the washer made a horrific screeching sound and a strong rubber-like burning smell. Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like the belt broke or the lid switch could be bad. Use a screw driver to manipulate the switch with the machine on. If you can tip the thing back enough to check the belt. I hope this helps.
Run any load - large or the least bit bulky (like sheets) on the "BULKY" cycle. It takes longer, but the machine completes the wash. This shouldn't be the way it works. I love the Neptune TL for its retro look and lack of Maytag's classic big cranky knob. Too bad it runs like ****.
If the clutch fails the first thing noticed is a UC or DC error displayed and there is no drain or spin.
If you are seeing the above error and having a problem with spin and drain then the most likely cause of this is the clutch. The clutch fails to lock down the spinners and the basket is unable to go into spin and without a 90 RPM there is no drain.
Replace the clutch.
