Basically teflon is what is known as an ultra high wear molecular material, meaning it absorbs impact and is slightly spongy so when there is pressure it reverts back to it's normal shape and does not wear rapidly. Using a soft material with a hard material such as chain will result in the chain eventually wearing out. A good example is a rubber hose rubbing on a piece of steel, the hose is unaffected and the steel turns shiny and wears into a groove first.
