Hi, The problem with the TV could be its power supply, could be a dry joint or faulty capacitors/components if you know someone with soldering skills you maybe able to get a repair kit for it if not then consult your local tv technician, there will be plenty in the phonebook or search the net for one local to you.
The power supply boards can be fairly costly upto about 100 GBP or more, some places do sell them second hand once the board is identified at about half the price or like I said you can get repair kits for some power supplies at a fraction of the cost if you are able to replace components yourself.
Dangerous voltages are present in your TV even when turned off so If in doubt please consult a qualified TV Technician!
