Try running the generator with the fuel cap loosened. If it runs without shutting down, look for the pinhole vent in the fuel cap, and clean it. It sounds like you're fuel starved due to a vacuum being created in the tank due to the fuel being pulled out, and not being replaced by the air. Give it a try as this is a common issue.
Some generators do not have a venting cap (most do), and you may need to look for the vent, but there will be one.
