Hi robidublin20,

If you want set a Security Code or Network Key to your network so that other people can't connect to your router you need to access your router. To access your router just open a Browser then type 192.168.2.1, password is blank. Click on the Security under Wireless. You can set the security type of your router to WPA or WEP to make it secure. Under that you can set the Security Code or Network Key. Personalize it so that that you can easily remember it.

Don't forget to say thanks. Thanks for using Fixya.

I have followed directions to set a password on my Belkin 54 but it still does not ask me for a password when I go to access it.

There are a couple of passwords involved, are you sure you got the right one?

First is the user password for the management interface of the router.

Second is the wireless access key, which is set up in Security option under Wireless section. I suggest WPA PSK or WPA2 PSK mode if available, TKIP option, and entering a pretty complex key (password). And Apply.

Please come back and leave a rating/testimonial if helped or post a comment for further assistance.

Belkin 54 router

Hi
I'll try to help you make a start.

If your router is already connected up and ready to go, you can access the user interface screen in your web browser. Open the browser as if you were going to view a web page, but instead type
192.168.2.1

in the address bar. This should bring up a popup box for you to enter your username and password. These will be the defaults if no-one has changed them.

For your router, I believe the default password is simply blank, ie type nothing, just press return.
You can change the password in 'System settings'.

Please come back if this is not clear, or if you need help setting up wireless security. This is only really a couple of steps, but the first step is to get into your system :)

Belkin 54 encryption

1. Log into your Wireless Router or Access Point.
Open your web browser and type in the IP address of the Wireless
Router or Access Point. (The Router’s default is 192.168.2.1, the
Access Point’s default is 192.168.2.254.) Log into your Router by
clicking on the “Login” button in the top, right-hand corner of the
screen. You will be asked to enter your password. If you never set
a password, leave the password field blank and click “Submit”.
Click the “Wireless” tab on the left of your screen. Select
the “Encryption” or “Security” tab to get to the security
settings page.
2. Select “128-bit WEP” from the drop-down menu.
3. After selecting your WEP encryption mode, you can type in
your hex WEP key manually, or you can type in a passphrase
in the “Passphrase” field and click “Generate” to create a WEP
key from the passphrase. Click “Apply Changes” to finish. You
must now set all of your clients to match these settings. A hex
(hexadecimal) key is a combination of numbers and letters from
A—F and 0—9. For 128-bit WEP, you need to enter 26 hex keys.
For example:
C3 03 0F AF 4B B2 C3 D4 4B C3 D4 E7 E4 = 128-bit key
4. Click “Apply Changes” to finish. Encryption in the Wireless
Router is now set. Each of your computers on your wireless
network will now need to be configured with the same
security settings.

Security of wireless network

You can directly connect your computer to the router thorugh the routers "internet" port and then re-run setup. OR you can type the IP address of the router into your address bar (the default is tipically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and then enter the router username and password (I believe the Belkin default is username:"Admin" password:"Password") in the admin control planel look for a "wireless security" tab. You can then define your wirelss security settings there. Just remember to configre the same settings on all devices that will connect to the router.
