AKAI 54 there are double images with red and pale yellow and green, there are drop down lines in gereen which makes a half loop from the top and bottom lines draw up

Ur Convergence board is dead or deffective with the IC chip.

You have a convergence problem.On this model you can change the convergence amp board which has the convergence IC's on it making it an easy repair.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.

If the distortion that you see can be described as somewhat of a 3-D picture, the problem is teh convergence circuit and this can be fixed easily. Also, if you can solder, you can fix this yourself. If you wish to do this, please update this and I'll provide you with some instructions.

yes you just need two ICs

If your model number is the PTH5498 you will need to replace both convergence ICs they are stk 392-040 you can get replacements at the followig link and they will provide fre instalation instructions with pictures. Here is the link.

More than likely your akai has defective stk392-040 Convergence chips . it also may have open resistors generally 3.9 ohm flame proff. this board is attached to the top left looking from the back of the set it is screwed on by 1 screw black in the center . after installation this will probably half to be converged dinamically. which means you will half to get to the grid this is done by using the remote press mute 183 quicly to enter numbers on thew remote 2 to adjust red 4 to adjust blue horizonta 6 to adjustred vertical and 8 to adjust red vertical using center button to go up and down
