DVDs recorded on HR720 do not play on any other player or PC!

Hello there,
I've recorded loads of stuff on hard drive and then copied it onto dvds (different types but mainly dvd-r disks). They play perfectly on the player itself but I've recently discovered they are not playable on any other player (I've tried 4 different players) or PC. Pretty disasterous situation because I've built up quite a collection of films and my HR suddenly developed a very annoying start-up problem - sometimes would start up only after about a dozen attempts. It looks like it's on the way out...
Does anyone know what could be the problem? Does it have anything to do with the compatability bitsetting the recorder uses to make discs only readable on itself. And if yes, how can I change it?
Many thanks in advance.

Many thanks for the post. The thing is my machine never asks me that or in fact anything else. It just copied the stuff onto the dvd and says 'finished copying' or something at the end and that's that.

I am not sure what you mean exactly by locking. Do you mean writing lead-out?

Hi there,

not sure if this will solve your issue. But in order to be able to see the DVD recorded on the HR720 (or typically any other DVD recorder) you need to "lock" it. This is done in the File Manager Menu. The DVD recorder will ask you twice, whether you want to "lock" the disk. Once you have done that it will format the DVD like a normal DVD-Video, meaning it can be played on any regular DVD player. However, once locked you cannot re-open the DVD.
Hope this helps. Otherwise check in the user manual under "recording a DVD" - it is mentioned also there.

I have Magnavox DVD player/vcr DV225MG9, does it record from vhs onto dvds? And if not, what do I need to get so that I can copy all of these old vhs movies to dvds?

it won't record dvd's its only a dvd player. only the vcr records
if the vhs movies your trying to record are movies like star wars and stuff like that it's copy protected and no worth the trouble. if it's home movies or something you recorded from tv they might work. if you get a dvd recorder/vhs player.

When I want to copy a CD must I only record on a CD blank disc; i.e. not a DVD

It depends upon what type of data you want to copy onto a CD or DVD.
If you want to copy and play music in a CD player then it needs to be on a CD disc.
If you want to copy and play movie DVDs in a DVD player then it needs to be on a DVD disc.
If you want to backup data files then it can be on either CD or DVD discs (depending upon the amount of data to be stored on the disc - CD holds 700 Mb, single layer DVD holds 4.7 Gb, and dual layer DVD holds 8.5 Gb of data).
A DVD player can read both CDs and DVDs, but a CD player cannot read DVD discs.

How to transfer Panasonic DMR-E80H recorded DVDs to computer

I have to agree with XELIAM regarding finishing the disk, under the DVD "FUNCTIONS" selection from the remote. I also use the SLYSOFT products to transfer my videos to what ever other mode of video I wish to have, whether iPOD (MP4), or DIVX (AVI) or loads of other options. Slysoft makes a GREAT product

Won't play my downloaded dvds

Sorry, you need a different DVD player. That kind won't eccept DVDs that have self-recorded stuff on it.

DVDs and backup

Since recordable HD DVDs are not yet commercially available, I am afraid the only way to store your HD videos is to keep them on your tape, move them onto your PC hard-drive, an use an external hard-drive. hopefully there will soon be online video storage services that support the HDV standard.

Won't Read blank disc!!

I my DVD-HR735 wont recognise any discs at times, and is getting worse. I've now discovered (out of frustration) that if I tip the front up to between 30-45 degrees, it will play all the discs it says were unreadable. I've started jamming three dvd boxes under the front of the machine when i want to play dvds.
