A friend gave me an optical tape measure ranging 600, I've never used one and don't understand quite what it's for or how. Not sure if it's for surveying or how to even go about using it.

It's for general purpose measurements. Usually, point it at a wall and press the measure button. It will indicate the distance from where you're standing to the wall. With a little practice, you'll be an expert and won't need to use a tape measure for the longer distances.

I just bought a fujifilm AX230 and it says you can film movies which it does but its only 10secs at the most. Is there a way to be able to film longer movies? Right now i have the 4GB SDHC card it came...

First, make sure the manual says longer movies are possible. You may only need a faster card. Most cameras shoot movies quite well with class 6 or better cards.
