Processor compatability Do I have to get a special processor for a laptop, or are all processors the same?

  • Anonymous Feb 09, 2009

I have an S1 AMD Sempron 3200 ~ 1.6G and I think it may have been fried. My computer is stable when I have only windows installed but when I put on any Anti-virus software I get the blue screen treatment. I have run MEMtest86 on my computer and another with my RAM in and only my computer came up with errors. the HDD is OK (also checked) so now I'm hoping a new CPU will do the trick. If I'm going to buy a new CPU I would rather upgrade than go back to the sluggish Sempron. I'm told the Turion 64 x2 will fit. I guess I'm looking for a Turion 3200 so the frequencys match? Will the Athlon 3200 fit and what is the difference?

Over to you guys and thanks for looking into it!

Processors have a matched frequency rating with the motherboard and memory. So, when replacing or upgrading the processor, the new processor will need to have the same frequency as the old one. If the processors use the same type of memory, ie... PC2100, then ther are most likely compatable, and the use of a processor that was made for or from the same make of laptop is always a good idea. Some processors are designed specifically for use in certain manufacturer's system configurations. For example; say you have a Dell Latitude C840 with a 1.8ghz processor and you want to upgrade to a 2.2ghz processor from a Dell Inpiron 8600, this will work. Both of these machines use the PC2100 memory and have a matched frequency rating of 266mhz, and the processors are made for use in Dell machines. If you would like to tell me exactly what you're wanting to do, maybe I can recomend a processor for you. Let me know.

SOURCE: compatible upgrade processor for intel pentium

The E5200 would be a nice upgrade. It retails on Newegg.com for 65-69.00 and usually has free shipping. And if you have a compatible motherboard and purchase a nice heatsink, it overclocks very nicely.

Dell inspiron 1420 cpu upgrade ???

There are very little things that you can upgrade in an laptop. The processor that you have on your laptop is top end processor in its family and the thae best you can do is to go for a faster core2duo as any other processor will not fit on your laptop motherboard.

Contact your system manufacturer to know about compatible processor for your laptop.

I want to come emachines 627 processor to a intel processor

If the processor in your laptop is an AMD, then sorry you cannot change it to an intel processor, the cpu socket on the motherboard is not compatible. If, however, you have an AMD processor and you want to upgrade it to a faster AMD processor.

Hp compaq d350 sff processors compatibility

Your best bet is to work from the existing processor model number, since manufacturers can change the motherboard in a given model of computer from one range of serial numbers to the next. They sometimes also offer the same model of computer with different processors and motherboards at different prices. So you can not tell much from the model number of the computer.

May I also advise you that changing a processor requires a little special procedures, equipment, and knowledge these days. It is not just unplug one and plug in the other any more. If you do not know what you are doing you could easily "fry" the new processor from excessive heat, due to incorrect installation. So look for some help if you are not sure of the details for replacing a processor chip. It's not hard, just that some things that may not be obvious are critical.
