IBM ThinkPad T42 Notebook Logo
Anonymous Posted on Feb 06, 2011

I have an IBM Thinkpad T42 and the sound stopped working a couple days ago. Device Manager says everything is working properly, but when I go to the Sounds option in Control Panel, it says there is no audio device installed, which is incorrect because it was working fine until now. Tried to reinstall the driver from the Lenovo website (twice) and it does nothing. The computer still makes the usual log-in log-out sounds but will not make any others.

Sound driver for IBM is soundmax. Go to the device manager, right click the sound devices, remove them. reboot and it should reinstall the drivers. could just be a odd conflict, the fix above should get it going again.
Or If you've installed the correct driver for your computer and OS and still no sound:Open Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices>Audio tab>Sound Playback, Default Device, should something like Realtek...., AC97... If not the driver is not correct or the installation of the driver failed.
If the driver shows to be as described above. The issue is: Mute turned on, Volume too low, speakers not connected properly, no power to speakers , speakers not powered on.

I followed the instructions and SoundMax was reinstalled. Still no sound. When I went to the Sound and Audio Devices area, under Audio it says "No playback devices." It also says "No audio device" in the Volume tab.

You need to download new updated drivers from IBM site and still problem remains then you must rush to your system dealer or a authorized dealer.

I can not hear sound from ibm thinkpad t42

If you are using windows XP, click Start, right click My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager.

Check if your Sound device is installed. If not, download and install the driver at http://www.ibm.com/products/finder/us/finders?pg=ddfinder&cm_re=other-_-suprcn-_-download

enter your laptop model found on the bottom.

IBM thinkpad T42 internet works with ethernet cable but not wirelessly.I checked the device manager and downloaded the latest driver but still doesn't work. Could the internet card be out of date?

It seems eaither your wireless card has gone bad or it need to be reseated. Its quite easy to take out the wireless card and install it back. Try it and if this does not work you need to ask IBM to send you a new Wireless card if its under warranty or buy a new external wireless card.

IBM T42 with no sound card

It should be part of the mainboard rather than a separate card. Try uninstalling the drivers, then reboot and see if it detects new hardware.

No sound

First, go in and remove the service pack 3. This sp has done nothing but create conflicts with operating systems and software. You don't need it. Then go into the device manager and uninstall the sound drivers and reboot. The machine will find the sound card and reinstall the drivers automatically. Then you should be good to go.
