I would want to locate exactly where the leak was coming from and approximate cost for repairs. If you have some gas bills to compare current costs to prior costs and then a estimate to repair you can deceide if the cost to repair offsets the price for wasted gas.
As far as I'm concerned any gas leak that is bad enough to have a large impact on gas bill is bad enough to need fixed.I would recommend that you have a qualified service tech check the unit over and locate leak and estimate cost to repair. I don't have a lot of faith in most gas companies service men and most of their guesses on the severity of a leak are just that
I hope this helps you some.Unless it is a very small leak I would have it fixed. Thank you

With this being on the outside it is probably no real danger especially if you are using natural gas as it is lighter than air and will dissipate quickly. Thank you.

Millivolt pool heater will not ignite

Most heaters do not require power for the pilot to remain lit. Is there power at he unit? If it worked yesterday and not today has anyone turned it off at the circuit breaker? If you have power turn the gas valve off for 10 minuets and then relight to see if it needed a reset.
