If your PC originally came with Windows XP - there should be a sticker on the case of the PC. It will be a 'genuine' Microsoft label...for XP.
There is a 5x5 code there for you. this code is very specific to the disc/recovery method you are using.
If you are using a Windows XP disc as an upgrade to the OS that was on your PC originally, the 5x5 code you need is located on the original box of the upgrade, or possibly on the sleeve the disc came in.
If you do not have the OEM sticker on the case of the PC or the genuine label from the box/disc....well, you are kind of out of luck.
If you have a brand-name PC, you may be able to obtain the ORIGINAL recovery discs from the OEM...sometimes for a fee. These original discs are sometimes self-activating - meaning you would not need a 5x5 code.
Yes Ana, you can install Windows XP professional. SP2 will be fine too. However, it may run into issues finding the specific device-drivers your PC uses. Do you have any CDs with your device drivers, i.e. audio/video cards, printer, network cards, etc.?
You would need those before you start installing the new system.
One of Windows annoying so called “feature” is CHKDSK being automatically being run whenever you don’t shut down your computer properly. You get the blue colored screen that says “Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. To skip disk checking, press any key within 10 seconds(s).
Simply pressing any key would stop CHKDSK from running but when you restart your computer, you’ll get this prompt again. Sometimes even after letting CHKDSK scan the drive that it wants to, CHKDSK would still automatically run at next boot! Here’s how to disable or stop CHKDSK at Windows bootup
There are some people suggested to edit the registry but the proper way to disable CHKDSK from starting up is using the /x switch on chkntfs command in command prompt. The /x switch will exclude a drive from the default boot-time check. If you have drive C: as your hard drive, then the command to disable chkdsk from scanning C: drive would be: chkntfs /x c:
If you have 2 drive, C and D, you can disable chkdsk with the command below chkntfs /x c: d:
Check your motherboard BIOS specs. I know that Windows XP can see a larger hard drive but some BIOS issues could limit the maximum partition. (My XP box started with a small drive but I added a larger SATA drive later and formated it with the XP disc management software. One caveat: I was using SP3)
To expand your partition, try using a third party partitioning software option. These will often save you from having to reinstall the os (sometimes things go wrong but mostly they are good). I've had good luck with Paragon Partition Manager and Partition Magic (before it was purchased by Symantec).
I hope this helps.
Cindy Wells (Paragon offers a 30-day free trial of their Partition Manager software; however I am not aware of the limitations of the software.)
check all other system utilities like msconfig or regedit...if it does restart or shutdown then your system is infected with some kind of virus .....all you have to do is install mcafee 8.5i enterprise version and update it to latest dat file and scan your system thoroughly. this might remove your virus but now you have to fix all corrupted files by running system file checker. go to run type sfc/SCANNOW........this will start checking all corrpted files. for this you need a win xp cd....do reply back
if you got two harddrives or two partions make sure that you only have one os installed.you can try reinstalling it again or zero your drive.(fdisk)this will right zeros to your disk and destroy all data, including virus.before doing any of this go start-right click my computer-properties-advanced tab-start up and recovery colum and make sure there is only one option
under the defult operating systems if there is two that could be your problem, click edit and determine wich is the new os.if there is only one try reinstalling or zero all drives(backup all data first)
there is always an option where it says whether u want to install windows,it will not do that before u give permission..there will be a repair option too..what u can do is right click on the C drive and use the options to check for errors..hope it helps!
