Zoom lens is stuck out position...won't retract. Power on button produces yellow flashing light on back of camera, then off again automatically after a few seconds. Any hope of getting lens operable without prohibitive cost?

Lens errors are quite common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.

You can try the following:
1. Try compressed air. With a fine tip blow off gun and dry compressed air (20 lbs) set the tip between the lens turret and the camera body and turn on the air while moving the tip around the lens. It should remove all dust and sand. Turn the camera on and it should function fine.
2. Place the camera on it's back and look at the lens from its side. It may look slightly crooked. If this is the case, power up your camera and apply pressure gently to the side of the lens to center it. It should then extend fully.
3. [Try at your own risk] Try forcing the camera lens. Turn off the camera. Place it on the back with the lens facing up and take a look at the spacing between the lens and the lens housing. If you notice that the gap is not even all the way around the lens, the problem should be easy to fix. This type of a problem usually occurs if the camera was dropped while the lens was extended. Simply - VERY GENTLY - press down the lens on the side where the gap is the biggest. You should hear a click as it pops back into place. If the lens is stuck at an angle, put the edge of the lens not the flat front, on the edge of a table and press the lens back towards the center. It will either click back in place and work or it will break off one of the three pins that ride in the grooves of the lens barrel. Try powering the camera back on.

Hi i had an e18 error appear and the lens was stuck. the lens is now going in and out but the focus is compleatley shot every thing is blured any ideas?? thanks

Hi,

"E18" indicates an error that involves the lens unit or lens cover in your camera .This error appears where the lens is prevented from properly extending or retracting .The error may also be displayed if the lens camera has been subjected to an external shock, or if a foreign substance (i.e. liquid, sand, dirt) enters the camera.Hold the camera so that your fingers do not touch the lens unit when you are shooting. Make sure the camera is off before the camera is placed back in the case. Exercise caution to ensure that the camera does not accidentally power on while the camera is stored inside the case.If you cannot clear the error code by turning the camera off and then on again, or if the error code is displayed frequently, a camera malfunction may have occurred and might require service from canon. Or else try pressing the power button on and held it down while extending the zoom lens. The lens will extend out and the camera will be freed from the error.

Thank you !!

My samsung pl50 won't turn on it just bleeps at me when i try and the shutter is stuck out. it was working fine when i was taking pics of my sister then it just shut down n won't turn back on

I've sent back 2 phones with this exact problem. Came on here and found the solution on the blog from another camera. It works! Here it is:
Figured it out....the zoom lense, while in the open position, was a little out of line, thus preventing the camera from retracting it. After gently re-aligning the lense, it retracted properly and the camera resumed normal functioning.
So basically, wiggle the lens every so slightly then try the power button again. Hope it works for you!

Camera lens stuck

The lens has probably got something in the retraction mechanism that is stopping it retracting. This can be something as simple as sand or grit or as a result of a drop or knock. In most cases the camera will need to be stripped apart to remove the lens assy before it can be repaired. This is best left to a professional camera repair shop.

Flashing yellow light -- lens won't retract

Lens is jammed, you need to get it back on track. Gently push lens back in with a flat object to keep it straight, like a tabletop while powering it on. This may or may not work, but a jammed lens on these styles of cameras is common and renders the camera useless.

Camera really messed up!

Have you tried taking out the batteries and leaving it alone for a bit, then loading new batteries? I would try this first before anything. Good Luck.
