Rheem Flared Water Heater Dip Tube Logo
Anonymous Posted on Feb 05, 2011

I am trying to replace the dip tube in my RheemPowerVent water heater but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the old one out. The treaded metal cold water nipple is screwed into a circular plate so I assume this circular plate is part of the take and does not come off. The nipple does not have a hex section so I can't put a socket on it. The only thing I can see using is a pipe wrench but that will mess up the threads which is viable as it appears the new tube has a threaded nipple on it provide I have the correct tube.

Well you will need to use a pipe wrench and yes it will mess up the nipple. You will need to buy a new nipple and install it after the tube has been replaced. If you have can get a inside the pipe nipple extractor tool you can remove it (most of the time) unharmed.
It sounds like you a replacement tube that comes with nipple built in, if that the case your good to go without a new nipple.

1) Rheem power vent series:
http://www.rheem.com/product.aspx?id=C24E3F52-A6A4-4BC7-AF5B-0DF23A7A0263

2) Looking at product over-view manual: It says 'inlet connects directly to a dip tube which directs water to bottom of the tank.'
So it appears that dip tub is connected to heat trap nipple on cold water side

3) Sample manual for Rheem shows exploded parts list
http://globalimageserver.com/fetchDocument.aspx?id=a92c7d0e-8a95-48ba-8810-cd714f33d47a
The exploded view shows cold water nipple separate from dip tube, and shows dip tube gasket, and makes it unclear

4) Manual shows Rheem phone number:

Does an Intertherm water heater model HSE 30F 240S have a dip tube? Cold water comes n on the side of the tank not on top or bottom.

How to Repair or Replace Defective Water Heater Dip Tubes

www.familyhandyman.com > Skills > Plumbing
The role of the dip tube is to direct incoming cold replacement water to the bottom of the tank for heating. While it warms, the dense, cold water stays naturally segregated from the warmer, lighter water floating on top. The water for faucets and appliances comes from the hot layer on top.

How do I get rid of the particles in the water?

This is the build up of calcium on the heating element that is now breaking off.if you turn off the heater and water you can drain and replace the element which is a small step to cure this .long term you would need to consider new tank or even go to installing soft water unit as the problem shortens the life of all devices like taps shower heads washing machines dishwashers within you system.

Water does not stay hot for very long. Runs out

the problem is your 8.5 year old water heater.

Have you regularly drained out the sediment from the bottom?

Is it possible that the dip tube has corroded and fallen to the bottom?

8 years is a good life for a hot water heater ... it might be time to let it go ...replace it before it starts leaking and causes more trouble.

There could be other reasons for this difficulty ... still i think you have gotten your use from this unit.

Dont kill the messenger in this case.

Thanks for using fixya.com

Water heater heats but not to same temperature

Try shutting off the gas, shut off the water, and drain the tank to remove any sediment that may interfere with heat transfer from the burner. If that doesn't do it, check the dip tube to make sure it is still intact. The dip tube directs incoming cold water to the bottom of the tank and the hot water is tapped from the top of the tank. If neither of those turn out to be the problem, check the thermo-couple. Since a gas water heater typically survives about 6-9 years, you may be better off just replacing it.
