You can't EVER connect an output to an output and expect good results.

It has both optical and coaxial digital outputs but just a coaxial digital INput.

Connect ps3 just sound to surround sound

PS3 has an "optical out" port. Use an optical coaxial cable (something like this one XO Digital Optical Cable 2m 2 Metre Premium Install Series suitable for... ) to connect this to an optical in port on your surround sound receiver/amplifier.

Go into the sound settings on the PS3 and set it to output dolby digital 5.1 from the optical connection.

Switch your surround amplifier to the appropriate source.

Ps3 doesnt give out a surround sound output

Hi
In this configration you will not get surround sound. Because tv is not able to reproduse the surround sound through its out put from the HDMI input. You have to connect the HDMI of PS3 to the Onkyo receiver and the HDMI Monitor Out of the Onkyo to the TV. This can only done if the Onkyo AVR Have HDMI IN/OUT option.

If not the connect the Optical out of PS3 to any one of the optical input of the Onkyo receiver.
After that you have to goto the setup Menu the Onkyo and assing the optical input in wich you have conncted the PS3.

Aslo the following setting in PS3

Menu>>> Settings >>> Sound Settings >>> Audio Output Settings >>> Select the connector..= DIGITAL OUTPUT (OPTICAL)

I bought an opticall cable to play my ps3 threw my philips mx 3800d surround sound system but it dose nothing why wont it work please help

Hi,

You have to set your audio out settings, since your PS3 is probably connected via HDMI and both video and audio passes through it you will need to select your audio source through the PS3 audio output settings and set it to optical out, here is a guide you can follow: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/audiooutput.html

Can older receiver support Hdmi with an adapter?

The optical cable will get you 5.1 surround sound - but only if the game has surround sound and your PS3 is set to output surround sound. Even the PS2 will do that. DTS is one 5.1 surround format and the optical cable will handle that too.

Check your settings on the PS3 and make sure you are:
Using the optical out, and
outputting a 5.1 surround signal.

I think you will find your JVC is adequate for this purpose. Please post back if you are unsure of how to set those options.

Audio decoding

You will need to tell the PS3 to use the optical cable for digital output in its setup, as well as tell your amp to use the optical cable as the input for whichever 'source' you wish to have associated with the PS3.

No sound through tv speakers

Well the problem is that the PS3 only allows output on one channel. So, this is only going to be optical out, or hdmi, or even AV. You only get one option for the output.

Now, if your TV has the capability.. Run the sound through the HDMI to the TV and then let the TV output the digital sound to the surround system. This will give you the option of turning off the surround and re-enabling the TV's stereo speakers.

I hope this gives you an idea of what the problem is. If I were you, I'd just do as I said. This is exactly how I have mine setup. I have a 600w sub on the surround, so late night movies can't be played on it without the neighbors being woke up. So, I simply disable the TV's output and use it's speakers. :)

Connect PS3 for playing/viewing blue-ray thru surround sound

Connect the PS3 to your TV with the hdmi cable and to the surround sound system with a digital optical cable, then set your PS3 to output sound through the optical port (through the sound options menu) and you're good to go!
