Our microwave has stopped working for the second time in two years. When you try to heat something, it hums but not quite like it is heating. There is also a funny smell.

Usually a odd sounding hum combined with an unusual smell is caused by the magnetron. Another source is from the high voltage transformer or diode.

My Rusell Hobbs 20L microwave wont heat food, what could be the problem?

If the control circuit turns on the power supply to the magnetron tube, the big power transformer should hum. Then after a couple seconds, it should hum louder as the magnetron warms up and starts to put out RF. If everything stays stone cold, the magnetron is probably shot.

These are repairable, and the parts are available. But you have to decide whether it is worth repairing. If it's past warranty, probably not. I am a radar transmitter engineer with 40 years' experience with these kinds of tubes, and if my ten year old microwave quits, I'm going to just throw it out (after I take it apart just to see what quit).

My GE over the oven microwave does not heat (1.5 years old). The heating and turntable stopped working at the same time. When you start it, it sounds fine, but nothing heats. You can hear a relay or...

It does sound like a relay malfunction or similar switch. Could be repaired but call for a quote or better yet, take it to a repair depot (probably cheaper).

Microwave make a deep humming sound ,does not heat and the circuit breaks

I would say your magnetron has failed.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

If it's within the one-year time frame, the repairs should be free.

Microwave appears to work fine but will not heat at all.

Sounds like the thermal protector on the mag tube quit. It may have gotten too hot and opened up. That is the lesser of all the evils that can happen to a Microwave.

GH7145XFB-1 not heating properly

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose conneciton on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and disassembly information at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Will not heat.

Hi I've been out of the microwave repair business for a few years now, but the technology has remained virtually the same as far as I know. You obviously have some knowledge of them, as you know about the safety switches in the door. Microwave ovens are actually a very simple device, to test it, put a coffee cup of water inside, and set the unit on high for one minute. A second or two after you hit the start button, you should hear a fairly loud "bong" noise, and a hum that continues untill the time runs out. That noise is the magnetron starting up, and if that noise does not happen, then the magnetron or related circuitry is probably bad. NEVER open up the oven, as the magnetron may be charged, and must be discharged by a technician. If the sounds that I described are present, then the water should be boiling or close to it in one minute, if not, then something I've never seen has gone wrong. Assuming you had a year warranty on it, I know from experience that if you contact Goldstar customer service by phone, or letter, they will often extend their warranty a month or so to keep happy customers. Its worth a try. Hope this helps you out. P.S. Never operate a microwave without something inside (Non metalic)
