I have an HP (compaq) NC6320 laptop with a TEAC DW-224E-R DVD RW Drive. I had to restore windows (XP Pro) to resolve other issues. After the restore the DVD drive wont open. I can open it with a paper clip and it also wont read the disk. Windows recognizes the drive but just opens an empty window when I go to it. I uninstalled the driver and forced it to reload on a reboot which went fine, but still doesn't function. Any ideas?

Go to this "Website," and "Fill-in" or {Choose} any information needed to get the "Drivers" you need. Than you'll be able to "Download the Drivers."

Download VLC (google it) for free, see if that plays the dvd. Most likely your player has an issue, VLC plays ANYTHING (pretty much!) without issue.

If that doesnt work then you'll have a problem with the actual drive.

hi no its only a CD RW, and not a CD/DVD-RW its just a CD writer and a dvd( rom )..read only memory which means it only reads dvd's but does not write them...hope this helps

It is only compatable for CD RW.
Not DVD RW.

Here's the newest driver for your burner. Go to Control Panel, then Device Manager, then click on the + symbol next to disk drives, and double click on the TEAC device. Click the Driver tab and press Update Driver, then choose the 'Let me find the driver' option, and navigate to the folder where you unzipped the file to. Double click and Install. Reboot.

Is you cd-rom drive shot - are you trying to boot up your computer through an xp or windows cd? If it is, it's not going to recognize and boot up. You'd be best getting a new drive - look around for someone with a Compaq Evo 800cp. They have the same exact cd-rom drive. Here are your compatible cd-rom devices:
TEAC DW-224E-A
or a Compaq DVD-ROM DRN-8080B
otherwise try a HP SD-C2612. I have these three drives. They all work really well.

Try this but be careful to find the exact key as not to do damage!

Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.

The answer is what you profess. The drive can burn CD's, read CD's and also read DVD's. Everytime I try and burn a DVD I have an unrecognized drive and the properties always show no disk: The drive burns CD's ie;music, but cannot burn DVD it can only read DVD like you say!
