It looks like your Photosmart 1115 printer uses an HP45 black ink cartridge and an HP78 tri-color cartridge. Some HP printers will accept re-manufactured ink carts, while other HP printers will not...just so you know. I've always bought genuine HP ink cartridges on eBay to save $$$.
I suggest you run the 'Tap 10' diagnostic test pattern for your HP PS 2600 series printer model...this will display the electrical health of the ink cartridges and confirm that your printer is operational (I am guessing one of the ink cartridge control lines is open). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTFOBtdthAc
there is a plastic tab on the black plastic latch/cover to the black ink cartridge. In most cases that black tab has broken off, and the cover is not setting the cartridge in the printer properly. Use some super glue/nail glue to glue the tab back on. BE CAREFUL!! There is a tiny ribbon cable that attaches to the cartridge device, do not break that cable!!
You need to clean the nozzles of the ink cartridge by dabbing on a wet paper towel folded many times, after the water you dab on a dry area to see if there's a solid black line. If it's a refilled cartridge it could be just worn out, they're only good for about 2 refills.
Make sure you have removed the tape from the printhead on the cartridge. If you have sone this, then you can try turning the printer off and on a couple of times and see if this helps. You may need to press the OK button
Well you've got a nice printer! With 6 different ink cartridges, you only need to replace the one(s) that is low. Black - C8719EE Cyan - C8771EE Magenta - C8772EE Yellow - C8773EE Light Cyan - C8774EE Light Magenta - C8775EE
Simply turn off the printer, open the cover to reveal the bank of ink cartridges. Pop up the white-ish plastic covering tab, pull out the old cartridge (this should not require too much pressure). Then pull off any protective film from the new cartridge, re-insert one at a time. Power up printer wait for self test, should be all set to go
Your printer creates it's black by using ALL the colours together. This effectively gives a very dark purple rather than black.
It sounds like you have a colour cart that is drying up or may be struggling to get enough air into the cartridge. Make sure you have removed any tape over the vent holes if you are using compatible inks. If not then try running a couple cleaning cycles via the button panel/driver.
If you alter the settings in the driver by going into START - PRINTERS AND FAXES and then right click on your 2610 and select PROPERTIES - the changes you make in here will be set as the default settings for each print job.
