My computer is often finicky about which usb port it will read my ipod from. Often, the solution is as simple as changing to a different port when you plug it in.
very simple. you need to get an SD card reader from your local electronics store ( CC or Best buy). it's very simple. the memory card goes into the card reader and that ensemble plugs into any of the usb ports in your computer. once plugged in, the computer will recognize it as external memory, just like a flash/thumb drive and your comptuer can read the pictures off of the card without any interaction with the camera itself. you will be able to see both the picture and video files on the memory card. all you will need to do is copy the pictures or the videos, and paste them into any folder you wish. your computer should have no problem recognizing those files. and windows media player should not have a problem reading the video files either. with them on your computer you can just drag and drop them into any video editing software that you have. i have a canon sd750 and that's exactly what i do. works like a charm.
