The possible reasons for this could be;

1.)A loose connection between either the graphics card and the computer mainboard or between the Graphics Card and the Computer Monitor.
2.)Your LCD monitor has become faulty and either needs to be repaired by a technician or replaced.
3.)Your graphics card need to be cleaned, clean the gold finger contact on the card.

However in my experience I would say that the monitor has become faulty, try this monitor on another computer and if it still displays vertical lines then you know that this is the case.

If your monitor works on another computer then I would say that your computer or Graphics card is having some troubles.
Overheating plays an important role here.

Kind Regards

Dell Inspiron 9300 Vertical lines

Try re-seating and cleaning, the connection between the display and the Motherboard, (Electronics cotton swab and rubbing alcohol, be sure not to leave any of the cotton fuzz on the connectors.) It will be below the keyboard. If that doesn't result in any improvement, the display will probably need replacing. You can find the complete tear-down guide here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9300/sm/index.htm

My Display has a permanent white 1" vertical line about 2" from left side on my monitor. Start menu is OK but when loading running anything it is always on the top and makes everythin hard to read,work...

dead lines can be an indicator of a failing LCD screen or inverter. I would take it to a certified repair shop. The inverter should be fairly cheap, the LCD probably not so much.

Numerous, bright, multi-colored vertical lines on 9300 screen

Try taking out the Ram memory first one stick at a time. Sometimes when Ram goes bad or overheats, it first affects the display. If that is not the issue, here is the link to your service manual.

I have laptop dell inspiron 9300 it 17 sreen , it has a white verticle white line about on the middle about inche 1 1/8 wide hohow to fix? thank you...very much

Unfortunately, there is no way to fix it.
This line called "Tab Separation" of LCD.
You'll need whole new LCD display.
Very very common problem.

Vertical lines in my laptop screen

Try connecting an external monitor to the Dell Inspiron 9300 and see if the vertical line is also present on the monitor. If the monitor display is fine, then your laptop’s LCD display panel is defective. If the monitor also displays the vertical line, then your problem is with either the video card or motherboard located inside your laptop.
Not sure if the Compaq Presario has an external monitor plug, but if it does the above procedure can be applied to that one as well.
