Depending on the age of your heater, from what you described, it sounds as if the Thermocouple needs to be replaced. because it's an Infrared Heater rather than just a Blue Flame model. I would recommend, that unless you are very handy with tools and gas heating appliances, not to undertake the repair yourself. The Thermocouple itself is not an expensive part at all ($10.00 to $15.00). So having a professional repair it is the safest way to go. Because, during the repair he/she can also clean the interior of the unit and check or test for any of problems.

Keep in mind, DESA International who manufactured the Vanguard Heaters is no longer in business. But, some parts (like the Thermocouple) are still available.

It's always best to have your heater cleaned and service at least once a year. Normally, in the Fall, before you fire it up for the season.

Pilot lite won't stay lit

Thermostat flame sensor. Do you see a little rod next to the pilot? That is what tells the main gas valve that the pilot is lit and it is safe to give gas. Easy swap, and you can usually just pick up a generic one.

Pilot light won't stay on

Dust gets inside the pilot safety during the months when it is not in use. Blow out the pilot safety without disturbing the flap. and retry.

When I tried to light my furnace, the electrical wires from the thermostat don't spark all the time, therefore my furnace won't stay lighted. What can I do to fix this?

Is this an older furnace where you have a pilot light? Are you saying the pilot light will not stay lit? If thats the case then likely you need a new thermal couple. That is what the pilot light keeps hot while it stays lit. It is a safety device that is there so your furnace will not come on if there is no pilot light present. Very common. Hardware store item. Need Furnace's make and model #'s.
If this is an electronically controlled furnace, you will need a service call.
