Try first by connecting the drive to another USB plot .
Go and see what happens in the Device Manager and update the driver .
Connect the device to a friend' s computer to verify if it's working there .
Maxtor has been taken over by Seagate where you can find support and downloads : http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/
If the drive used to work fine previously , it's probably damaged . Download and install a recovery tool from http://www.geckoandfly.com/3163/crashed-hard-drive-hard-disk-data-recovery-software-tools-and-service/
If this still doesn't work , open box ( will be lost ) and connect drive inside your dektop as secundary . The chance is serious you will be abble to access your data .
