I HAVE A MAXTOR 3100 I CAN NOT CONNECT TO IT I HAVE HAD IT FOR AT LEAST TWO YEARS IT WON'T EVEN COME UP IN THE DRIVE LOG, MAYBE WHEN I WAS DELETING OLD FILES I MAY HAVE TOOK THIS OUT IS THERE A WAY TO RESTORE SOMETHING THAT I PURCHASED AWILE BACK OR IS THIS DEVICE NO LONGER GOOD TO ME , I HAVE ALOT OF STUFF STORED ON IT LIKE A LOT OF PICTURES. Connect it to a different computer. If it still is not detected, then there is a hardware problem. Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

Have you checked the Power Adapter of the Maxtor 3100?
- If the Power Adapter is defective and won't give power try to change the power adapter with the same specs.
- If the power adapter is good, then the board in your maxtor 3100 is defective.
- Now buy new enclosure for your Maxtor 3100 because the HDD in it is IDE.

this message comes mostly due to the nonavailability of the drivers. so i would request you to first install the drivers of your maxtor personal storage 3100 to your DELL studio computer, then connect your maxtor storage to your DELL computer. this should fix your fix your issue.   

Shut it off and unplug it from power. Let it sit for a day before trying to connect again.

Make sure you've rebooted your computer before trying it again.

Hard drives fail sometimes but so do the enclosures to - so you may still have the data.

If it does work - backup everything immediately.

If it's clicking - that's the sound of death for hds.

If this can be done on DOS mode environment why not try it. Delete some unimportant fies so that it can free some spaces. Then try to view it again in windows environment if this helps.

If the computer is connected to the power line, even if it is shutdown, you probably have in the BIOS settings the option to power it on from external sources like LAN, USB etc that is turned ON. So the USB port are still powered hence the external HDD is powered also.

My Maxtor 3100 did work with my XP widow machine at one time. But suddently my computer doesn't recognize the USB connection. How do I fix this?

Yes, it is wise to do a house cleaning on your Maxtor. Whether you delete everything or not is up to you. However, do not do this by formatting the hard drive.

If you find you need a file later you deleted from the drive, a free program called 'FileScavenger' can recover it for you. If you format the hard drive the ability to recover a file becomes highly unlikely.

We techs have expensive software to recover files should you need to get it retrieved, but the interface is designed for techs and not the average user.
