Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS IXUS 130 Digital Camera Logo
Anonymous Posted on Feb 02, 2011

It got wet and now wont turn on. It was diet soda that sprung a leak in my pocketbook. I grabbed cell phone first and camera second but while not immersed it probably did get inside. I do get a quick turn on then it goes off in a second.

Hi.

Liquid damage operates in two ways. Liquid causes shorts and contacts that can blow components causing permanent damage, or that may just temporarily affect the unit for few days (camera usually won't start until liquid inside has dried).
Oxidation following the contamination may cause permanent damage to boards and components. In some case oxide can be removed disassembling the camera and using circuit cleaner solution.
The incident was caused by soda. This make things slightly worse, as the ingredients may help oxidation.

When there is liquid damage, any electronic part inside the unit may result affected. In some case the damage may be only temporary, depending on how lucky you are.

The repair cost depends on what parts must be replaced. In the best case the technician disassemble the unit, cleaning the boards and allowing dry up.

Before sending the camera for repair, remove the internal battery, and allow the camera to stand in a dry place for 4 or 5 days. Leave battery compartment open.
Leaving battery in after the damage has occurred, or any attempt to start the camera while liquid is still present can make things worse.

If that does not work, you can get a quote on repair contacting Canon at the service number listed on the owners manual, or you can get a quote from a third party service here: Repair.

Repair will approx. be between $40 and $80.

Regards.

Ginko.

Well, I gave you the repair cost, I guess that was enough to decide.

Yes it is generally worth repairing.

    Goodbye.

I heard that different soda companies have added Splenda to their drinks. I personally use Splenda all the time with my coffee and really like it. What sodas contain Splenda?

Splenda has been added to a new type of Diet Coke product in 2005 called Diet Coke Splenda. Pepsico. uses Splenda as well in its Pepsi One product. Mountain Dew contains Splenda as well. Other products that use Splenda include Dr. Hansen's Diet Sodas and all Dr. Rite soft drinks.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of drinking diet soda?

Diet sodas are definitely healthier than regular sodas, but they have their disadvantages as well. The advantages are:

They don't contain any sugar- you won't gain weight from them and they won't raise your blood levels.

They contain a very low amount of calories- you can drink few servings of diet sodas without having to worry about the calorie count.

The disadvantages of diet sodas are:

They are not as sweet as the regular sodas, which some people will have hard time to get used to.

Artificial sweeteners used in sodas pose several health risks. For example, aspartame has been linked to causing cancer, Alzheimer, and birth defects.

Diet sodas can actually make you gain weight (indirectly) because people who drink it tend to look for sugars from other types of food.

My Garmin GPS has gotten wet

Reasonably well, actually. If the soda was DIET, you're in fairly good shape, as sugar complicates the process. Either way, you'll need to disassemble the unit... carefully!... so as to expose the inner circuitry. Be careful not to break any wires; things in there can be quite delicate.

Once inside, disconnect battery!

If there's sugary soda inside, gently and thoroughly rinse under a lukewarm faucet. This will NOT hurt the electronics any more than they're already hurting, and is absolutely necessary if you have any hope whatsoever of repairing this.

If there's diet soda inside the device, I recommend the same, though it's not quite as critical.

After thoroughtly rinsing and and all soda from the device, gently shake the excess water into the sink as best you can, then position the devie in front of a fan for an overnight drying session. Be sure to allow ample time to make absolutely certain that all water has been evaporated away by the blowing air. DO NOT USE A HAIR DRYER AT ANY TIME !!!!

Once dry, re-assemble and pray for the best! Caution! Be sure you've given the fan ample time to dry the device completely! Err on the side of caution by leaving it there longer than you think you need to !

Wet phon

If the screen is working, your phone seems fine, however, you must take this phone to someone who knows how to open the phone and clean the IC. The drink must have gone inside the phone due to which the keypad is not working. For the iPod, it seems the battery isnt charging anymore. Thats why it won't work when not connected to the power. So, get the battery checked.
