If the cylinder in the lock is not turning anymore when you put the key in -- then there could be a stuck pin inside the cylinder. use a teflon or silicone based lubrication and spray into the key hole and cycle the key in and out a few times and then spray some more lube in and cycle the key some more,, spray one more time and let it sit for awhile --- after sitting for awhile, try the key again.
if it still wont turn the cylinder then it needs to be rebuilt,, take the lock down to your local locksmith shop and have them rebuild the cylinder to the key you want. the cost of this is only about 8.00 to 10 dollars ( depending on where you live ) and it only takes about 5 minutes.
now there is also a chance that the lock might have another issue going on here --- if you remove the knob from the door and with it in your hand, try the key and see if it turns left and right,, if it does turn then the problem is not the cylinder but the thumb turn part of the lock jamming up,, you can also take the parts to the lock shop and get a replacemnet pretty cheap.
one more thing to check is to make sure the lock is not to tight on the door -- and what I mean by this is that on some hollow doors they get squished in to the point where the lock/unlock part of the lock drives into the thumb turn part and it has way to much pressure on it. again - if you remove the lock from the door it should all be pretty clear what is the problem here.

Schlage BE365. Worked fine inside. Installed it in the outer door. Worked good. Hour later tumbler keeps spinning and doesn't unlock. Possible it doesn't work in cold weather?

yes could have frozen, unlikely . I have found that exterior doors usually close tighter with the weatherstripping pushing against the door effectively preloading the back set
( latch mechanism) causing pressure on the latch components. sounds to me like your tumbler connection to the back set has malfunctioned for some reason, take it apart and check the little flat bar that goes from one side of the lock to the other and make sure it is correctly inserted into the thumb turn on the inside of the door.

Is there a special tool for removing commercial locksets?

The spanner tool that Schlage includes with many of their new locks will work on the old ones. Search Google images for "schlage spanner wrench" and you'll see different styles, but they all can be made to work. You remove the inside knob (or lever handle, but let's say it's a knob) by sticking the pin end (or a straightened out large paperclip) into the hole in the knob towards the edge of the door and press in the springy retainer. While pressing in the retainer, pull the knob away from the door. If the pin is all the way in, the knob won't move away more than about 3/32", so after it starts moving, remove the pin and the knob should come off the rest of the way. If the inside knob has a keyhole, then you need to turn the key about 90 degrees, or as far as it will go, before the retainer will move. If you don't have a key, then pick it, or drill the pins so it will turn. If you don't care what happens to the old lock because you are going to replace it, you can cut off the inner knob with a hacksaw. Cut as close to the rose as possible. Once you have the knob off, use the spanner to remove the inside rose trim, and then pull the lock out of the door from the outside.

New deadbolt notworking?

You have the lever that goes from the key cylinder part of the lock through the striker portion of the locking assembly turned part way, either in the wrong direction or not turned enough in the right direction so if you take the inside portion of the lock off and pull the outside portion out of the door and rotate the lever to its proper position and then put if all back together in the correct sequence it should work properly.

Our schlage lock with thumbturn on inside and keyed on outside. When unlock inside, knob turns freely as if it is really unlocked but if I close door, I get locked out. Please help

Be sure the outside knob is unlocked before closing the door.
Schlage locks do not lock the inside knob or lever. After releasing the turn button, also turn the inside lever or knob, then check the outside knob.
What model of lock is this?

Schlage BE365 - How do I remove the key? It will lock/unlock door but cannot be removed from lock.

Recommend resetting the lock back to factory settings and try reprogramming. Also if you don't hold the latch while turning the key to lock/unlock the door it may not be recognizing the keys inserted and this will keep the key in place. Try that before resetting to factory just make sure you hold latch and turn key until it wont turn anymore.

Schlage deadbolt will not unlock even with the use of a key?

it sounds as though the linkage that pulls the deadbolt back has disengaged... if you undo the screws from the inside of the door and remove the manual knob there will be 2 more screws holding the key lock to the door. A thin flat bar is attached to the key lock that goes through the deadbolt and into the manual knob. This bar turns with the key, sliding the bolt on its track to lock and unlock the door. Once the lock is apart check the key in the lock to see if the bar turns when the key does. then see if there is anything that may be obstructing the deadbolt from sliding. The locks are pretty indestructible so if there is a problem it may have been from the install... perhaps the door is to wide for the lock to engage properly and the lock worked loose in the 6 months that it worked.
