Have you updated the system software to the latest version? One of the recent updates (2.41) has caused this same issue for lots of people (read comments in this article) http://www.slipperybrick.com/2008/07/sony-ps3-241-firmware/

one person suggested formatting your hard drive, and on the next boot the ps3 should prompt you to download firmware, which theoretically should fix it. At this point it may be worth a shot, you should go to sony's support site for ps3 and follow the instructions on how to do that, or just check out some forumns, don't give up hope!

I Have the fat 40gb ps3 system and it does not read blu-ray discs only dvds or music cds. I updated it to version 3.55 because i thought that maybe it was an update that was missing and it still wont read...

Hi,

This is a very common problem with the PS3 and is most often caused by a problem with the laser on the Bluray drive which is malfunctioning and can no longer 'see' or read the game disk properly.

The PS3 uses a dual laser system. This consists of either a dual refractor type lens or two entirely seperate lenses depending on which pickup is fitted to your particular system. One laser is for reading ordinary DVD disks and PS2 disks and the other for Bluray and PS3 games.

The symptoms you describe are quite typical of a failure of one or both of these lasers.

For more information on how to resolve the problem yourself please have a look at this FixYa Tip on the subject.

Many thanks for using FixYa

None of my ps3 games will play but normal dvds all work fine. any ideas?

well, the 40gig model of the ps3 can have either the dual laser lens, or the single laser lens in it. they started out with the KES-400A single laser lens, but somwhere along the line, they started putting the KES-410A dual laser lens in them, which is supposed to be a more reliable laser lens, but they do fail as well. the most common reason why a ps3 won't read ps3 games and bluray discs, but will read dvds or cds is because they have a red diode that only reads dvds and cds, and a blue diode that reads bluray and ps3 game discs. i would say your blue diode has kicked the bucket and needs to be replaced. you will either need to send the system to sony for repair, or to a third part company to have it replaced, or you can replace the laser lens assembly yourself

Wont load any disk

Like said above, It needs a new laser. It's a really common problem.

I buy mine at http://parts.consolerepairguy.com they run about $75 each.

I run a repair business and that place has best prices aside from Hong Kong which I don't trust.

PS3 does not recognize games and DVDs

Yes this is quite common and normally it needs a clean on the lens you can do this yourself or you can send it in to fix it.

Discs are not reading. everything else seems to work. Internet, pictures, music all work. games and dvds are not showing up at all.

There is no currently fix for this, sadly.

it is the latest update (3.01) thats been screwing peoples Blu-Ray drives badly.

theres only 3 things i can advise you to do.

1. call sony and send it to them so they can fix it (not free).
2. get a new lens and change it yourself.
3 hang in untill sony sends out something that gonna fix it.

and personally im choosing option 3, since its sony who screwed it up, and not me, and i dont feel like paying sony a fee for fixing my ps3 they broke.. but thats just my point of view.

(yes i got the same prob myself)

Isnt reading games

it Depends on the model but usually this happens because of dust or dirt on the lens so a cleaner may help. although if that doesn't work it means the laser has gone bad, which is a common problem with ps3's. Some newer models of ps3 have dual lasers so if the blu-ray laser fails you wont be able to play blu -ray disc (games, movies) but the other laser will still read dvds (non blu ray) and cds

Dont wanna read ps3 games

if it will still read ps2 cds dvds and ps1 games then your blu laser just burnt out this is a common problem. if you are under warrenty still send it back if not you can pay sony $200 to fix it or loose your warrenty and spend $80 and 10 min of your time to fix it. message back if you wnat to know more and how to fix yourself

My ps3 wont read any discs

Sounds like a faulty/dirty/bad laser. Call sony 1-800-345-SONY (7669)
ask them what they can do! Normally its at least 168$ charge to get your ps3 back in order unless you are willing to open it up yourself.. if so let me know I can help you find parts and help you fix it.. parts are not to expensive but in the long run it may be better to either sell it as broke or send it in!

I do buy broken ps3's and can get you a deal on used or new systems!
