depends what you need it for. It's a newer designed, no frills laptop. It really falls under what you'd call a "corporate design". Not recommended for lots of gaming or media usage. But will be a reliable work type computer...
The test Dell advises to narrow down this issue is to remove the battery, hard drive, ram, and optical drive. Next plug in the a/c power cord and you should get some LED's coming on. If not it points to the motherboard.
Your description is a little unclear but I have dealt with many d600 laptops that suffered from bad batteries. Battries shipped to customers between April 2004 and July 2006 were problematic.
