This small back-up battery on my Sony is under the main big power battery, it is like a large screw under the main power pack, I just turn that screw and the little round lid comes off to get to the little silver flat back-up one. They are readily available from most good camera shops like Jesops for around £12 to £15 each.
Sony DCR-HC21 has a multi-AV in, your Hi-8 should have a mini (4 band) to multi AV out. The cable would look like a stereo headphone cable on one end with thre RDA type plugs on the other end; red, white, yellow. The mulit in on the DV would probabaly be the same type connector. Youd have to use a coupler set for the two multi-av cables to bridge video to video and audio to audio. Come out of the Hi8 into the miniDV recorder. You should not need a Dazzle unless you want to transfer to a PC for editing before moving video back to a miniDV tape.
I believe all Sony model DCR-TRV2XX and 3XX would play Hi 8 and ST8
Such as DCR-TRV265, DCR-TRV285 DCR-TRV340, DCR-TRV355
I hope that give you some ideas
