Black smudges are usually caused by a defective or worn out drum. When the drum gets a fingerpirnt, any kind of oil, or anything else that causes the static charge to not hold the toner to the paper, the toner will not go where it is supposed to in order to create the image on the paper and it will cause smudges, streaks or lines.

SOURCE: Canon i560 prints a black smudge pattern on left side of page

There must be some small piece of paper or paper dust buildup near the left side of the paper feed/press mechanism under the printheads.
Open the cover and inspect the far left area along the line of head travel - there often is a metal plate with small wheels that stabilize the paper, and under that plate look for some foreign objects. Try gently removing them with a toothpick - it is soft enough not to cause any damage, and also will soak in any ink residue that might be left there.

Lexmark c532n prints smudges on page

The problem could be caused by the photoconductor units. Try to swap the affected photoconductor units (like swap the magenta with black and cyan with yellow). If problem still occurs, then the photoconductors need replacement. I suggest you contact Lexmark Technical Support for assistance. Thanks

When using it as a copier it prints a black line down the page, how do i fix this?

You need to clean the scanner glass. Even just a minute smudge can cause a line to go down the page.

4 - black ink smudges (1/32" wide x 1/16" high) in right margin

Very nice trouble shooting. The image defect you describe point to the OPC or drum unit this is essentially the toner cart. In your case black. Measureing the distance between repetitive defects is a sure way of diagnosing problems such as yours. Again nice work.

Google repetitive defect ruler for your model to help in the future.

Hope this helps

Printing black smudges across the page at 10 cm intervals

Most likely cause by the drum unit. Replace drum or upgrade printer.

Too much toner on paper which then smudges

Try reducing the print resolution using the menu buttons. Does it smudge with coloured prints? If so then the fuser unit is faulty. If it is only black that smudges it is likely to be the K Developer unit. Ensure that you are using genuine toners, not refills or third party as the quality of toner can cause similar results.

- Try to reallign the cartridge, run a print test, after that if the issue still persist - uninstall and reinstall software - run test and re-allign again the cardtridge using software. run print test again.
