Smudges, Lines?, Tracking LInes? How to Clean a Laser Printer
Smudges Smears and dirty tracks on your
paper are from your roller bar's build up of toner. You can do this
yourself if you're willing to put some effort into it. The solution
to this is written below.
To clean up a laser printer
that's leaving lines/smudges/smears on paper do the following and

Digging into the guts
of your machine is how you clean it up if you know how or are handy
this way with things mechanical. And, may be the only way if you've
printed a lot of sheets and the inside of your printer is filled with
toner dust. The dust comes off the paper itself and just gets inside
and starts to blow around until you see what you're seeing on your
printed document.
Two things to be aware of though, you
will want to do this outside or in a garage on a plastic sheet and
wear gloves. The toner is static sensitive by design and it gets
everywhere. You'll want a small vacuum with a clean bag you'll trash
later, canned air, a 3/4 inch natural bristle paint brush (less than
a buck type) and some lint free rags. All these things you'll have to
trash when you are done as you'll get them saturated with toner. I
use an old Orek cannister vacuum outside and no bag to get better
suction and the hose can be swapped easily on this vacuum with the
exhaust to blow out (blow the toner out first before you use it on
your printer. The vacuum blow side is good and economical instead of
going through cans of air all the time.
Remove your toner
cartridge carefully, close the open port and place it in a bag large
enough and place it well aside.
Disassemble the unit in a laid
out order that will help you to reassemble it later.
As you
take each component out blow it off in an area away from disassembly
area and downwind from you. Look for areas you can clean out further
with your disposable brushes and then blow that area out too.
When
you get to the rollers and have done the above sequence put a clean
brush in alcohol and wipe down the rollers until they're clean. Once
the rollers are done, you'll need another clean brush and soak the
rollers down with clean water. The alcohol shrinks the rubber
compound and the water will rehydrate them. This is pretty important
as a roller that has shrunk from dry humid climate or cleaning the
rollers will start to slip or worse one side will and the other won't
and you'll have a paper jam.
Go through your entire unit this
way and on reassembly you may want to look the gears over and see if
the white lithium is pretty dark, if so clean those off by wiping and
add new white lithium grease jto them.
Be pretty careful
putting the toner into place and make certain it is latched
correctly.
Once the unit is clean and reassembled just plug
the unit it while your still in your clean up area and power on and
then off. Do this a couple of times so the gearing seats itself. When
you energize a printer fully, it goes through a power on self check,
that will fail if you don't power on/off quickly a few times for the
gears to seat themselves. Then let the system energize completely.
You may get an error message, don't be too surprised, just look it up
and see what needs to be done about it.
Once it energizes and
powers up with no error messages other than you're not connected to a
computer start feeding sheets out the printer until they come out
clean.
You should be good to go at this point.. With your
computer off, connect to your computer and power up. If you have any
