Denon AVR-2803 Receiver Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jan 30, 2011

Hi, just connected a Blu Ray player to my sytem. I connected the player via HDMI direct to the TV and the audio output direct into Optical 2 on the Denon. Problem is that there is no sound. Also connected my Dish Network Sat receiver to Opt 1 on the Denon and no sound either. How can I get them to work? Is there a setting or something? Status says Analog. Thank you.

We can't make assumptions about proper and complete setup if you don't explicitly mention the steps involved, so... did you assign and select the digital inputs properly?

Page 23 etc

BTW: I concur with your decision to send the video directly to the TV from the BD even though Denon and others expect it to make a hop through the receiver first.

Get into your BD and find its audio out setup. Make sure its settings for digital audio output bit rates, speaker presence, type, size, distance and bass-handling are set correctly.

Yes, everything is setup properly on the setup screens but regardless of what input I choose on the receiver, it always states Analog. It never recognizes a Digital signal. I tried the steps on page 42-43 and had no luck. Excuse the ignorance but what is BD?

  • Anonymous Jan 31, 2011

    BD=Bluray Disk.

Clearly your receiver is not seeing the optical audio or assigning it to the input correctly. Is ther good 'light' coming in from the BLURAY and the SAT?

Evaluate the front panel indicstors and understand what each one means in the context of NO SOUND. Pay particular attention to EXT IN. (Page 44).

Another assumption to verify. Does the receiver produce audio from anything? Say, FM?

  • Anonymous Jan 31, 2011

thanks, I'll double check the BD. Strange though that the Dish receiver doesn't produce sounds either! Yes, I get sound from FM, 2nd DVD/CD and MP3.

  • Anonymous Jan 31, 2011

Well, that proves our failure is in the digital domain and EXT IN, MUTE, Tape are NOT the problem.

Don't look directly into the fibre. Shine it onto a piece of paper.

LG blue ray won't play sound from RCA sound bar. HDMI cable is hooked into HDMi slot on TV

the details you provided were very vague, however from my experience when a device is connected to another device via and audio capable hdmi cable, that device renders it audio output to the device its connected to and normally turn off all other audio outputs beside optical- I would assume there is an option in the blue ray player to turn off hdmi audio, which will in turn activate other audio outputs- you may also look for audio out port on your tv, it is ideal to connect the sound bar directly to the tv set audio out ports. To sum this up,
if you plan to use your player via hdmi cable you need to turn off hdmi audio output on the blue ray player and the plug an audio cable from your blue-ray player to your sound bar
you may also as i said connect your sound bar directly to your tv, the issue is most tv sets now a days do not have an audio out port, if you do then everything you play thru your tv will have audio via sound bar
there are several way to go here but unless your sound bar has hdmi av switching capabilities (im sure not) this is one of the most simple--Good Luck.

I don't have a direct solution but I am having the same problem when connecting (1) my Apple TV (2) my Blu-Ray player, etc. via HDMI. I also have a digital camera that puts out HDMI, and when I hook it up, I get the same story -- video only, no sound through the optical digital output of the TV receiver.

I am guessing that the HDMI inputs were an afterthought on this model, especially since the printed manual doesn't even show or mention the HDMI inputs at all! So my guess is that the TV's receiver does not convert the sound from the HDMI to the optical digital output. It does, however, send the amplified HDMI sound to the stereo speaker outputs on the monitor. It appears that only the digital tuner's 5.1 sound comes out on the optical digital output.

This is what I have observed, for what it's worth.

Got a Kenwood vr405 surround receiver, a Sanyo plasma TV, hd cable box and an insignia blu ray player. Both the cable box and the blu ray player are connected via hdmi to the TV and the TV is connected to...

If you would like to use high definition audio decoding, connect the HDMI from the blu ray player to the receiver. If that it not an option for you due to lack of equipment such as an additional HDMI cable to go from the receiver to the television for the video portion of the signal, then connect your optical cable again. After the optical cable is connected, make sure the Dolby Digital decoding is enabled on the receiver, and that the media you are playing also has a version of 5.1 surround sound. Then, enter the setup menu of the player (which I suspect this is actually where the problem might reside in your case) and make sure that Dolby Digital and DTS are not set to "downmix." Dolby Digital should be set to output Dolby Digital and so on and so forth...hope this helped.

How to connect BLU-RAY DVD player to Pioneer Plasma TV via HDMI

The best possible solution to your problem is :
Connect your blu ray player directly to the HDMI input of you Plasma and watch HD video....
and connect the 5.1/7.1 sound thru the optical or the coaxial link directly to your AVR 3805.
You will not loose anything on the Blu-Ray.
The sound is best processsed by the AVR3805, while the video, which is the real upgrade (BluRay) in terms of resolution of picture would be processed by your plasma.

Connect and Enjoy
