How do I connect an old 3-way toggle switch to my new 3-way dimmer?

Cookrobert- you have to determine wich wire is the common wire in the box (house). Look in the box and see wich two wires ore in the same sleave. (These will be your travelers, (more than likely a black and a red) the wire that is in its own sleave (black)with a white tied to other whites is the common. Now the dimmer will tell you wich wire is commom. Tie the tow commons together. The green wire is ground if your house does not have ground , cap it and forget the green, if your house does have a ground (bare copper wire) then connect the green to the bare wires is the house box. Now your to travelers on the house side will tie to the two travelers on the dimmer side. Once you have found the traveller's on the house side and dimmer travelers they can be flip flopped. It dosnt matter. Just as long as they are the traveller's it will work. It sounds complicated but I'm sure you got this. I'm a 30 year electrician. (master).. I'll be looking for your update my friend. Good luck

When changing switch housing to chrome how u get the blinker wire out of housing

The wires come out with the switches. Usually when you purchase a set of chrome switch housings, you swap your switches from the old housing to the new housings. If you bought the chrome housings with the chrome switches, you have to connect your original wires to the new switches. When you take the two bolts out that holds the switch housings together, the wires will come out of a slot that they run through.

Good Luck

Am installing a ceiling fan and do not have the installation instructions. The fan has a black wire (labeled Motor), a white wire (labeled Neutral) and a blue wire (labeled Light). What is the proper...

When dealing with older houses, you run into this a lot, but the somewhat newer houses will actually have the 3 wires to hook up the ceiling fans. You can still use your 2 wires, but you will have to double up the motor and light wires. Wire nut the Black and Blue wires together with your Black wire from the house, and the White wires will be tied together for your neutrals. You should also have a green ground wire also, be sure to hook that to a ground in the house too. Hope this helps!
