Hello, our Raymarine ST40 depth sounder on our trailer sailer has stopped working only shows 0.00 depth on the display screen. However the metres symbol now flashes on/off. I have checked the cable connections and can only guess that the in hull transducer has died ! Any advice appreciated.

Now there is a chance that the transducer is bad ,, but I would check the battery voltage and make sure you have a soild 12 volts to the unit. also in my many years of working with and installing these units on boats I have see the needle pins ( where the plug inserts in the back of the display unit ) bend and/or break off completely. look in the plug area of the display unit and make sure all pins are intact. one more place to look for the problem is in the plug itself, take the plug apart and inspect the wire connection and make sure they are all good. if after all the above has been checked then I would assume that it is the transducer itself.
if you have anymore questions with this problem, please feel free to write back and ask,

How can I stop spontaneous anchor alarm

The anchor alarm tolerance may be set too tight. Ray marine has an extensive library on-line. I have usually been able to find what I need there. May take some digging though.

Why does my st40 bidata read a maximum 1.3 knots in any conditions. I have checked the paddle wheel, it is running free and all 4 paddles are in place?

Even the smallest amount of friction can keep the paddle wheel from turning properly. See if it will turn if you blow on it. If not, there might be something impeeding it from turning easily.

In Speedometer 6y5-83570-s6 there are two black wires which is ground and which goes to fuel tank?

My Raymarine E80 depth display kept freezing up (display then says "DSM connection lost"). Of course, this seems to happen more often when entering a tight shallow anchorage in Alaska's inside passage. Raymarine tech support recommended that I update the display software and then update the DSM300 sounder software. I did this to no avail. Then Raymarine told me to install a dashboard mounted toggle switch inline with the positive power input of the DSM300 module so I could do hard re-sets (turning off the system power or powering down the displays does not reset the sounder module). This I did. Now when entering a tight anchorage, the display still freezes, but at least I can do a hard re-set with the new toggle switch and have the unit back up in about 40 seconds (a life time in a tight channel with the current running, etc.). Now, Raymarine says that if I send in the DSM module to them, they will replace it with their new circuit boards that solve this chronic problem that they have known about for a long time (hello, this is a significant safety issue - why no recall?).
Don't mess with this - send your DSM300 in to Raymarine!

Is it posible to conect garmin 420s gpsmap to st40 deth transducer

No. St series from Raymarine are made for digital depth only, not fish finding and do not talk nmea. The only way to get that Garmin of yours to see depth would be to go from an ST40 nmea out to that garmin nmea in. Or purchase a nmea 0183 smart sensor and hook it to the garmin.

Raymarine "DSM connection lost"

Murray,

Has the DSM and the E120 software been upgraded to the latest software: 4.12 for the DSM and 5.52 for the E120?

Try this first. You can download the software off Raymarine.com and burn each to a separate compact flash card.

I have seen many problems like you are experiencing solved with this simple change.

If this doesn't solve the problem, the DSM will have to go back to Raymarine for repair.

ST40 Depth and Knot meter

I traced the line from the mast and it was good so finally ordered a new instrument head "$150", It works now, the head was 2 years old {the length of the warranty} not a very long lasting instrument, hope I get more time out of the new one.

Raymarine St40 trouble

50/200 combination will work fine but 170/200 may be a little close in frequency and give you some trouble. "May be OK" doesn't leave me with a lot of confidence.
