I cannot send or receive faxes on the HP8500(tried 2 units) or on the 6500. I have connected directly to line(without DSL filter) and have changed DSL filter. The proper jacks on the printer are being used. All phone lines in the house have filters, including Directv line which is adifferent number. The line is always busy when dialed to and printer connected. When printer disconnected after dialing, nothing is heard. When phone line is connected to phone, all works (dial tone, dial in-ring, dial out dialed phone rings on other line in house). Could this be a voltage problem? Verizon has checked line...says it's ok. I received a suggestion to hook up Magic Jack to computer and other end to printer. There is no answering machine or answering service connected to the printer. Running printer's fax test results in "FAIL" /no active phone line detected.

The first thing I can suggest is you connect the unit to a known working regular unshared/non dsl phone line.
Check for dial tone.. if you get one.. place the unit in auto answer and call it using a cell phone etc.
If that works.. send a test fax.. at least you will know if the unit functions as designed.. chances are it will.
You do not mention if your DSL is via a Splitter (usually at the NID box) or filter.. or both however it sounds like a filter. A lot depends on how your phone outlets are wired.. if they are Daisy Chained.. you need to check every single filter and every single wall plate connection.. There are three basic wire routing techniques.. also known as Topology.. without knowing your style it is hard to diagnose.. regardless..
Some faxes are more likely to fail to any type of line "noise" than others.
You may need to replace the splitter.. or filter(s) or both..
I have seen broken wires behind the wall plate and even at the NID box on the side of the house. Often these wires appear connected until you examine them closely.
Again.. if you are not sure how the place is wired every jack should be tested. Even had lightning burn a needle sized hole in the phone line once causing a lot of line noise.. especially when it rained.
Disconnect the modem from the line and try the fax.. if it works.. you may have a faulty modem or a leaky port.. so to speak.. which would introduce line noise or interference to the voice line.
Finally as simple as this sounds.. check all he settings on the fax machine.. especially the tone/pulse setting. Obviously it should be set to tone.. these settings should not have changed.. but if it lost power.. worth checking.
Your problem is more than likely a DSL equipment related issue or a termninal connection issue then a fax machine problem.
Most likely cause is you don't have a dsl filter on your fax line. Without the filter, your fax machine's modem can't discern between a dsl signal and a telephone signal Since the telephone line coming into the building is now carrying a dsl signal, a filter is necessary to receive/send faxes.
Each phone or dial-up modem or fax machine needs a DSL filter attached to the phone line/socket then each phone or dial-up or fax machine is then plugged into this filter.
The DSL modem does not require a filter.
If your fax is part of the computer's modem then a filter is also required on the line-in on the modem.
The instructions for sending & receiving depends upon your system/dial-up modem (the make & model, is it stand alone or a modem adapter on the expansion slot or built-in on the motherboard) and the software you are using. Cannot help you without these details.
Make sure the phone cable is connected correctly and verify that the phone line works by connecting a phone to it.
Make sure that your recipient's fax machine is turned on and working.
If you connected the Epson Stylus CX to a DSL phone line, you must
install a DSL filter to the line or you won't be able to fax. Contact
your DSL provider for the necessary filter.
If your phone line has static or other noise problems, turn off the ECM (Error Correction Mode) setting and try faxing again.
Follow these steps to turn off the ECM setting:
Press Setup.
Select Fax Settings, then press OK. You see this screen:
Select Communication, then press OK.
Press and select ECM. Then press and set it to Off.
Press OK.
RECEIVING
Try the following if you can't receive a fax:
Make sure the phone cable is connected correctly and verify that the phone line works by connecting a phone to it.
To receive faxes automatically, make sure the Auto Answer light is turned on. To turn it on, press the Auto Answer/Space button.
Make sure paper is loaded.

You can buy a splitter to put on your line so you can run both devices. They sell them at the dollar tree big lots and everywhere else usually, and range from .59 to $2. as far as another DSL filter ask a friend neighbor or co-worker if they have or had dsl and have an extra filter. If not then you can pick them up for a couple of bucks at radio shack
Sending a fax by DSL requires one of two methods:
1. You obtain a DSL line filter suitable for connecting a standard voice telephone to the DSL line, then connect an analog fax modem to the line through the line filter.
2. You hire an Internet E-faxing service. See
