As long as you have a good signal going to the set, absolutely return the set, especially if it does the same thing when hooked up to another source like VCR or DVD.

Thanks henlopen, what you say is true, but the problem is very intermment and I'm doubtful if I will be able to watch enough from of VCR or DVD source before my "in store, 90 day" warrent runs out. I am have been watching an over- channel which usually has very good signal, but maybe a plane has breifly crossed the signal path. The TV doen't report a low signal condition; but maybe that's because it has only lasted as much 15 seconds so far. I need to hear for others who have been watching their HDTV's mainly from an antena source. How do other HDTV's respond with brief signal interuptions. I am otherwise happy with my Philips set and if other have experienced the same brief symthoms from an antenna signal then I may be assured enough to hang on.

Phillips 42 Lcd screen cracked is it just Phillips Lcd tv screens that fit or does any 42 Lcd fit

Not going to use one from another set even if same brand, frankly this is usually a waste of time as if the screen was damaged and the set was on or was at any time after powered up one or more boards in that set may now also be bad.

Buy a new set.

Our Philips 42" LCD TV (42PFL7704D) gets minimal

okay easy fix its the main board the a/v board you will need a tech to check to see if there are any leaking caps also the voltage on the board has to be 1 to 5% tolerance in difference since its dc you need a pure dc voltage also you can try to do a firmware upgrade on line easy you will need a flashdrive go to google and put in the model number of the tv eg. 42pfl7704d firmware try to rewrite the software if that doesnt work then my suggestion is to order a new a/v board

TV turns on for a few seconds and displays "NO SIGNAL" then shuts itself off. Can't change channels or adjust volume or accept any other command.

You are not the only one I can tell you that. I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.

Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors. Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected due to these defective capacitors.
Solutions?
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.

Hope this helps
