That means that the montior is not getting a signal from the computer. Have you tried plugging another monitor into the computer. Really the only way to troubleshoot the problem is to hook another monitor to the computer to see if the video card is outputting a signal. If it doesnt work with a known good monitor, you'll know that the monitor is bad.

Forgetting that the computer was on, I went to turn it on and shut it off while in sleep mode. The screen won't work.

A monitor does not normally save any states such as sleep. If unplugging the monitor from the power source for ten to twenty minutes and re-plugging it in does not fix the problem check and see if the monitor's menu comes up.
Even in sleep mode, the menu for the monitor should show. If it does, try resetting the monitor to factory default settings. If the menu does not show up, then there is an issue with the monitor.

My computer gets automatically locked. Hibernate and sleep period is set NEVER now. As per Microsoft help guide the setting is changed as under: <change advanced power setting, double click sleep,...

Right-button click anywhere on your computer's "wallpaper".
Click Properties.
Click the Screen Saver tab.
In the "wait" window, change the time-interval before it "locks" (due to inactivity).

HP f2105 monitor going into sleep mode on it's own

Does it do the same when you use this monitor with other PC, new VGA cable, just need to narrow down the problem first before start taking the monitor apart.
See pictures of what usually goes bad (mostly failed capacitors) with monitors:
