My ps3 plays movies but not games what can i do to fix it?

First make sure the game disc is not scratched or dirty. Get a cleaning kit and use it to clean the laser off inside your PS3. If it still don't work after you clean the optical drive then your diode has burned out (a very common problem with the PS3). The PlayStation 3 uses two different lasers to read a disc. One of the lasers inside is used for standard DVD's and CD's and the other one is used strictly for playing Blu-Ray. You will need to replace the standard laser to get your games playing again.

    yes there is. I would purchase the Maxell BR-LC Blu Ray Lens cleaning kit for $17 online. This kit should clean your blu ray optical lens and get your PS3 running right again.

    i already used a regular lens cleaner so is it going to make any difference if i use a blu ray lens cleaner?

I am 100% sure that this is the laser your ps3 has two different lasers one is red for regular movies videos or music and one blue for games and bluray movies try to play a blueray movie and if it don't play or plays for few minutes and then freez is more likely your laser it can be replace just look for you ps3 model and buy one for your ps3 model not all ps3's use the same laser there is like 3 diferent lasers

I have a playstation 3 console 80 GB, almost 3 years old.... was working excellent. But yesterday started with a problem, doesn't want to read and play either PS3 games or BluRay movies. But still...
I am having the same exact issue myself. Starting a month or two ago, it got harder and harder to get PS3 games to play. Now it plays anything that is not blu-ray based. I would be very interested in hearing how you are able to fix the problem.

My ps3 will play cd's dvd's and ps2 games, but won't play ps3 games. The 2 ps3 games i am trying to play have worked in the past , but now they will not read.
try watching a blueray movie if u have one but if u know wat colour the light is on the ps3 when u load the ps3 games that will help a lot and if u know how to fix ps3 error 80710102 it will help

If your PS3 is not playing games or movies any more then this is quite a simple fix you just need to clean the system you can do this yourself or send it back for repair

It wont play games or movies
Laser has to be bad then if its not reading brand new games or dvds. To verify this though get a can of air and gently blow it into the drive to make sure there is no specs of dirt or dust on the laser.

Now try the games and dvds again and if its still happening then the laser needs to be replaced and you can get them fairly cheap off of Ebay.

Wont play games or movies
Its a problem for the PS3 known as the SoD. It means you cant read any discs now. You can play demos and stuff stored on ur PS3 thpugh. If its under warranty, sony WILL fix it for ya.  
If not, be ready to shell out 125$

Try reseting the ps3 or try to update the firmware version to the latest, the problem may be fixed in an update. If that dosn't help call the sony peoplethey could help in this problem.
