Firmware Update Fails

I'm trying to update my GPS 315 firmware from v2.02 to v3.15. The software finds the receiver and connects at the correct baud rate. The receiver screen shows "Software Upload Mode Active" and the software stays at "Creating Link". Eventually the receiver times out and turns off without any update taking place. I'm using a homemade cable that works well with easyGPS and have tried 'Expert' and 'Auto' modes at 4800 and 9600 baud. I've tried XP, WIN2K, and WIN98 with the same results. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks and regards,

Larry

I'm not sure this will help, but per Magellan (see below), the firmware update must be run twice as your firmware is earlier than version 3. I have a GPS 315 with v2.03 and can't find a cable to update mine. My GPS 315 does not appear to have a cable connection either, just a screw port on the back for a carrying strap. Was your homemade cable wireless? How did you make it?

You must follow instructions exactly to avoid corrupting your unit's flash memory.

  1. Select the .zip file and save it to your hard drive. Open the .zip file using WinZip.
  2. Connect your receiver to your PC using the PC or Power/Data Cable.
  3. Turn on the receiver and press the NAV key.
  4. Make sure the batteries are at least 50% full.
  5. Select the MAGUP executable file from your PC.
  6. Follow the instruction until you see the message Upload Complete.
  7. If your unit's software version is earlier than 3.00, you will be prompted to turn the unit on again and load the software a second time. Follow the instructions.

I've bought a Garmin Nuvi 215w. The gps does not display all the road names on the map. Is there any way i can update the firmware?

I don't think updating the firmware will solve the problem however if you want to try you can update the firmware by connecting your satnav to the computer and downloading webupdater from http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27 When you have it set up it will automatically check for the latest version of software for your satnav. I don't think that will solve your problem though. The satnav will only show road names that are on the map.

Before trying to update the software try this solution first. On the satnav press Tools, then Settings, then Map. Under Map Detail press whatever it says and you'll get a list of options. Press Most. This will show the most map details and will show any roadnames that are on the map.

Then fire up the firmware software and let it do its job.

My garmin nuvi 5000 is frozen.

Hi there,

You need to download and install this update (firmware). This will correct the problem. If you cannot get the system connect to the PC try installing the software directly to the SD Card.

Follow the below link to download new firmware -

http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00639-10

Good Luck!!

I can't update the firmware on my forerunner 405 . The watch gives a transfer unsuccesful message, have tried repeatedly.

There are two steps for the firmware update - two bad Garmin doesn't warn people upfront.

The first update is preparing for the ANT stick - it takes about two minutes.
The second step is the core of the firmware(software per Garmin) update which takes about 10 to 15 minutes depending on how busy the Garmin Connect site is.

Since you already got through and got the "unsuccessful" message, I assume you already know how to start the update properly.
To finish it - Make sure you do not interrupt the process, just let it run through the 2 steps mentioned above.  And be patient - the 2nd step follows the 1st step automatically.  Don't touch the bezel and change screen during the update, just leave it alone.  It took me a few times to get it done successfully because after the 1st step finished, I started to flipping screens to find out if it get updated to ver 2.50, before I found out there would be step 2 coming automatically.
If you see the process bar moving after the 2nd step and see "software loading" you are in for good.

Hope this may help.
