Hello there.

It sounds like your computer might be infected with something, you should not be getting popups in this day and age :)

I would suggest 2 things, firstly you can avoid most of the problems on the Internet by using a safer web browser, either Firefox or Opera is much safer than using the included browser Internet Explorer6/7.

The second thing would be to run an online virus, trojan, spyware scanner such as housecall . This runs in your web browser and does not conflict with any antivirus installed on the computer, let it scan your computer and when its done it should remove anything found.

Doing this and using another web browser should speed up your computer which in turn should speed up your internet hopefully.

In firefox you can even install a plugin call 'adblock filter updater' which not only blocks adverts but stops them from even loading, this should speed up your connection some.

Try this and let us know.
Hope this helps.

I have new direct tv installation. now my dsl keeps dropping out. i unplug the direct tv box and everything is ok?

It sounds like they have given you the base DSL service with the minimal speed. If they did, it won't be enough to run two things at one time on the same dsl line. Call AT&T and check your speed or service that was installed and ask if it is enough to run to computers on the same line at once.
Also make sure that there is no filter on your dsl line that goes to your computer.

Here is another tip; the longer the phone line from the wall to your computer, the slower the dsl service. Longer cords slow down your internet.

Very slow progress bar accessing web sites desk top computer with windows XP using Qwest DSL service

Try using a different browser, IE8 is ridiculously slow onXP . Opera is by far the fastest but if you don't see a clear difference then your DSL connection is really too slow. Phone Qwest and ask for explanations and when they are going to fix that.

I have a hp officejet all-in-one and I can't get the fax function to work. I have comcast digital voice with a rca modem. The fax machine dials and the line goes dead. If I call the fax number on the...

Since you have a DSL ( Digital Subscribers Line ), the HP Fax printer works on Analogue Signals.

To make the GP Printer work on Digital line, First step you can do is to Reduce the Fax Speed from Fast/Medium to SLOW.
To Do so, Click on Setup button on printer front panel - Choose Fax Settings - Choose Fax Speed - Set it to Slow and try to fax

If this does not work, you will have to connect a DSL Filter ( this is a 2 way port - 1 port for Digital line and another for Analogue )
You will have to connect this Filter to DSL Phone line - in the IN port and from the Analugoue Port - Connect Phone cable to Printer Line 1 EXTN Port at back of Printer

Set up fax and dsl using one phone line

You can buy a splitter to put on your line so you can run both devices. They sell them at the dollar tree big lots and everywhere else usually, and range from .59 to $2. as far as another DSL filter ask a friend neighbor or co-worker if they have or had dsl and have an extra filter. If not then you can pick them up for a couple of bucks at radio shack

Connection with Netopia Cayman 3347w is very slow and becoming unbearable

Explaining an opinion on DSL's speed doesnt help fix a problem. Not to mention the fact that DSL is on a digital subsciber line, your own phone number, not the neighbors, you have it backwards, its cable that can have its speed impaired if all your neighbors go on.

Anyway, I am an expert with netopias. I trouble shoot them all day long on people's DSL connections. The symtopms that MacWyb is describing sounds like he has degregation of service that needs to be fixed by maintenance. They can do whats called a rip and rebuild, where they take off the virtual circuit and virtual path (vp and vc) and then build it right back, this clears this type of problem up quite often. It would also be a loose wire at the D-mark, the gray box on the side of your house, thats happened to me twice now. Or, It could be you're on a redback that has too many customers assigned to it, maintenance, if this is the case, would have to move your circuit, assign it to antoher redback, or brass router, whatever they're on.

In anycase, It means a call in to technical support with your ISP. They will create a trouble ticket to look at it for you.

This is all taking for granted you dont have a buzz on your phone (which would make it a telco issue, a call to your local phone company to fix the line), and that you have all your DSL filters installed on every phone in the house, including fax machines, etc.
