I have had an LG dvd burner(GH22NP20) for quite a while now, recently it has been unable to read any cd-roms. It reads dvd-roms though..... It will load cd-roms outside of windows so I know the drive is not bad. I am running Windows 7 64bit. I have been searching and have been unable to locate anyone with the same issue.

make sure that the dvd burner is getting enough power test all leads that are attached to the dvd burner including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or
your drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd burner then plug them back in or
you might have to uninstall then reinstall your DVD/CD or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device
control panel admistrive tools,computer management,device manager scroll down cd dvd rom drives right click you can you can update driver,roll back driver,or
select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall

It could be that there is a service from your burning software that is not running properly thus affecting the CD-ROM. If you have any of these software, try un-installing them.

Clean the DVD with water and shampoo if it is scratched.

If the problem happens with most DVDs, then you have to try get a replacement if it is under warranty.

I'll recommend you to directly try Driver Detective and let the software have a free scan to automatically detect & update the missing LG drivers. This way things can be much easier & efficient. Also you don't have to risk install wrong drivers which might cause severe system issues.

I had the same problem with the GH22 Internal drive on vista. Assuming this is the only cd drive you have, just go to the device manager and remove/uninstall anything under "DVD/CD Rom Drives" then restart. It should get picked up and recognized properly. It took a couple of restarts to work. For refrence, I only have the LG GH22NP20 installed, what appears in device manager are 2 items... (1)HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20 SCSI CdRom Device... (2) KU1051Q EAG855E SCSI CdRom Device... Incase you have multiple cd drives, this should help tell em appart. Enjoy. IDK399

your DVD Rom drive cannot burn DVDs because it is not a DVD burner, DVD Rom drives are different from DVD writers, if you want to burn DVD you must buy a DVD burner/writer.

Assuming you have tried different makes of cd or dvd disks, it's a classic drive failure problem where the laser can no longer burn or read dvd's, but may still be able to read cd's only. You will have to replace the drive, they are quite inexpensive, and very easy to fit.
