call DELL technical support number and ask if there is available spare parts for broken cover replacement, you might end up replacing the whole ink carriage.
It is very likely the ink cartridge is defective, i would suggest you remove it an few times and then reinstall it, if the message still appears replace the cartridge.
Driver software is still available at the Lexmark site, but since it's an older product Lexmark hasn't updated the software for Windows 7. If you are trying to use this printer with a new Windows 7 system, you may be out of luck. Try the current drivers. Drivers for 32-bix XP are here, 32-bit Vista drivers are here, and 64-bit Vista drivers are here. Vista drivers sometimes work with Windows 7, so maybe they will be what you need.
It's pretty simple. You lift up the scanning lid and bed, with the printer on, and the printer cartridges will settle to the middle. There is a plastic clip that holds the cartridges in place. You push down on the front, and it comes up and loose. Replace the cartridge, seating it firmly, and push the clip back over and down to lock it. The quick guide that came with the printer explains the process, if you still have it. Good luck, hope helps.
