2002 Dodge Grand Caravan Logo

I have a 2002 dodge gr. Caravan. It has started every now and then when I brake the pedal pulsates real bad (as if my car needs the abs to be working) then my abs light will come on. Once the light comes on the brakes brake fine. Then when I restart car later the abs light will turn off and sometimes redo this and sometimes not. What is wrong and is it costly to repair?

Recall...........................................

  • SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC Recall for 2002 DODGE CARAVAN
    • Recall Announced MARCH 13 2006
    • NHTSA Reference #06E022000
    • Number Affected 7,440
Summary: Certain aftermarket brake hydraulic master cylinders sold as replacement brake cylinders for certain Ford, DaimlerChrysler, and Jeep passenger vehicles. These brake cylinders were sold under the brand names of Napa, raybestos, aimco, ac delco, Carquest, bendix, and wagner. Only products that were manufactured from July 27, 2005 through January 17, 2006 (date codes 0529 through 0602) are subject to this recall. When subject to very cold temperatures, an internal seal in the master cylinder could lose flexibility and may cause brake fluid to leak.
Consequence: Loss of brake fluid can lead to a decrease in brake line pressure and an increase in stopping distance, which can result in a vehicle crash.
Fix: Affinia (brake parts, Inc.) will replace the subject brake hydraulic master cylinders free of charge. The recall began on March 20, 2006. Owners can contact affina group customer service at 1-800-323-0354.

My 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan has been having braking issues. No pedal will either go all the way to the floor or it will be real hard to push and seems to pulsate against being pressed. When the roads are...

Search for the brake fluid leak the brake system is a sealed unit if going through fluid like crazy it is leaking somewhere look under at back of tires and along the top of fuel tank for fluid if not noticeable on floor also inspect the brake booster

I have a dodge caravan that has the ABS and the BRAKE light on the pedal is rally hard but it goes away once in a while for like a day and all over again

Dodge used an ABS system for 2 years that didn't have a vacuum booster. Instead it used ABS pressure from the pump motor for the power brakes. This is the system you have. The ABS pump is mounted on top of the transmission. Is the pump running when the pedal is hard to push? Sometimes the pressure sensor in the ABS module will go bad and the pump won't run. You will get a hard pedal and the ABS light and the BRAKE lights will be on. The code in the ABS control module will be LOW BRAKE ACCUMULATOR PRESSURE.

I was struggling to go up hill in extreme snow storm. The Abs light came on in my Dodge Caravan. 2002 yr.

On the bad ABS system we have on our cars, sometimes the brake fluid pump gets stuck. On top of the transmission is a big rectangular block that is connected to the master cylinder by two big hoses. If the pump gets stuck you can put a metal pipe up against it and tap on the other end of the pipe with a hammer. If you do this with the car running you can sometimes get the ABS pump to fire up again and after a couple of stops the ABS light will go out. You will know if the pump stops working because the brake pedal will get hard and you will not be able to stop easily with both feet on the pedal. When my last pump died, I took off the old one (it is held on by one bolt), unhooked the two hoses from the master cylinder, bolted in a used one from the salvage yard that cost $20, and bled the brake system following the instructions printed on the brake fluid reservoir.

Bearings bad, grinding when I hit the breaks, petal pulsating

when your bearings start going bad two things happen first the ring gear that the abs reads the wheel speed moves to where it doesnt get a reading so that would probly be the abs light and second the flexing in the rotor will tend to colapse the brake piston leaving extra gap between the piston and the brake pad you might be able to confirm this by doing small short pumps and see if the pedal improves and it stops better i suggest replacing the bearings in pairs if you continue to drive the vehicle you run the chance of ruining the calipers hope this helps

On a dodge caravan the pedal goes to the end without brake

Abs system cannot permit air to enter the hydraulic system, You need to check everything for leaks. Likely you have slight seepage somewhere, likely at or in a line going to the wheel you found you had air again. Leak does not have to be large and at this point likely is leaving only damp residue. If air was in the front, also check inside the caliper piston boot....If at rear, check for dampness under the wheel cylinder end boots.

I feel shaking in brake pedal of my 99 rodeo and squealing

Most likely cause is out of round brake rotors.
They will need to be resurfaced or replaced to correct the pulsation you feel in the pedal.
One other cause I can think of is the ABS (anti lock brake system) is activating due to possibly a bad wheel speed sensor.
You can disconnect the power connector at the ABS control unit and road test the vehicle.
If the pulsation is still there than it is not an ABS problem.
