Hello,

This is more a configuration error. Depending on how you have your DHCP setup, you may need to adjust it's setting. No mention of what os you are using but if you set your DHCP to give IP addresses only to the LAN, set the ISP NIC address to receive its ip from the ISP provider, you should be able to get Internet access to your server and the LAN.

If you have done so, use the server os to setup your Internet connection. Answer a few questions about how you connect to the Net and the os will do most of the configuration for you.

Good Luck

Can't connect to router interface 192.168.1.1

Took another look by fixing word wrapping in notepad.

It's missing DNS Servers. Check your NIC settings and make sure you don't have a DNS server manually set to another IP. Plus, you might try resetting the router to default in case there is a DNS modification there.

I'm not sure if this is the cause, but I couldn't hurt. It's part of trouble shooting.

Good Luck!

If you're using an ADSL connection the details you need are below.

Settings for an ADSL connection through a telephone line.

Open a web browser and log onto your router.

Find Internet Wan > Connection Type.

Set the Router to use PPPoA, type in your User Name and Password in the spaces provided. If you do not have a Service Name or do not know it, leave the Service Name field blank. After you have typed in your information, click "Apply Changes". After you apply the changes, the Internet Status indicator will read "Connected" if your Router is set up properly.

WAN > Connection Type PPPoA
User Name > first[email protected] (or virgin.com or whatever)
Password > *******
Retype Password > *******
VPI/VCI > 0 / 38
Encapsulation > VC MUX
MTU > Leave as Default

Find Internet Wan > DNS.
Select Automatic from ISP
(Virginmedia DNS servers are Primary: 194.168.4.100 Secondary: 194.168.8.100)

Find Lan Setup > Lan Settings
Ensure DHCP Server is set to On

If the details entered are correct the router will show connected and the internet lamp will be green.

Do the configuration on a wired connection.

No connection to laptop.

I would imagine that you have the desktop wired to the 2wire router... Does the desktop have a static or dynamic IP? If you want it to be dynamic you will have to setup DHCP on the router to give the laptop an IP address... Otherwise set the IP on the laptop to the same subnet that the desktop and router are on, i.e 192.168.1.0... Make sure that the laptop is has a static (doesnt change) IP or its setup to receive an IP from the router or another DHCP server, if you have a DHCP server on your network... To make the laptop a DHCP client, set the wireless NIC to automatically select an IP and automatically select DNS servers, this can be done thru the control panel>network connections, then select your wireless NIC, right-click on it and select properties, on the first page of the properties menu, highlight TCP/IP then click on the properties button and when that screen appears, select the radio button for automatic selection of IP and DNS... if you will not be using dynamic IP/DHCP, you will manually have to enter the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS server IPs.... Let me know if this helps or if I can clearify something for you! Best of luck!

Hello jmazaredo,

Does your DNS server have your server fqdn in its tables, and does your PC have the address of your DNS server in its lookup table?

One test you can do is to use the hosts file to put the fqdn into and assign it an address this would let you know the the PCs can use host tables to do the translation then this becomes a DNS issue as opposed to a lookup issue and you cut your troubleshooting in half.

In other words edit your hosts tables (hosts file) with the entry (Example 1):

IPADDRESS FQDN ALIAS

192.168.10.2 somesystem.myhome.com. system
192.168.10.5 somesystem2.myhome.com. system2

This as stated will determine if you have a DNS issue or a lookup issue, because the DNS system will use host tables first and the do a DNS lookup.

Once this is done if it works then try this setup:

1) in your router set the DNS to capture the DNS of your ISP (normally the setting will tell the router to use the DNS given to it by the DHCP protocol.

2) turn on DHCP on the LAN side of the connection in the router and set the controls for proxy DNS service (using the router as the local DNS server also called caching DNS server), However set the router up to allow static IPAddreses and if possible to recognize the domain name of the local LAN.

3) set your servers up with static IP addresses and in their host tables set the fqdn up as stated above in Example 1

4) in your PC set the DNS to be the IP Address of your LAN side of your router i.e. 192.168.1.1 and if needed set the host tables of all PCs to the server addresses, fqdn, and aliases this way if DNS fails the system will at least have the host tables to use.

I hope this helps.

Thank you,

DNS problem

Hello, first of all where is your DNS coming from, do you use a server or is it from your ISP? If its from your ISP then add it statically, either call them or do an IPCONFIG /all form your command prompt you will see it there. Then add it...in your router under status doesn't it give you a public address and servers? anyway try that it should work...also if you use a server with DNS add that to the NIC as the first 1. Cheers!!!

What DHCP capability does the P310 support?

The Prestige 310 supports DHCP client on the WAN port and DHCP server on the LAN port. The Prestige's DHCP client allows it to get the Internet IP address from ISP automatically. The Prestige's DHCP server allows it to automatically assign IP and DNS addresses to the clients on the local LAN.
