Step 1
Check the power to the hard drive also check all the connections on the hard drive .

Step 2
you need to get Spinrite HARD DRIVE DIAGNOSTICS and burn it to a CD and boot into BOS to run the CD and check the hard drive for errors, The beeps mean that the hard drive has a big problem.

if the problem is still there let me know.

Hi Jane,
If you are using Windows as an operation system, you can try to install the HDD manually

Click on the Start button
Right click on My Computer
click on properties at the bottom
look for the Hardware tab and click on it
look for the Device Manager button and click
look for Action in the top menu
then scan for new hardware

If this does not work, look on the Device Manager screen and you will see + Disk Drives
click on the + and it will list the drives that it sees
if you see the external HDD uninstall it and reboot

Hope this helps

Hi there, seem to have lost my external harddrive on my desk top, and it is making a beeping sound??

Hard drives don't beep. They make a lot of sounds, but no beeps. If the drive is actually making an unusual noise, it has probably gone bad. Clicking would be a bad disk. Any other noise would be a bad controller board. A good shop may be able to slave your drive to another computer to try and save your data. But don't count on it. By the time a drive makes a loud noise, it's usually gone and unrecoverable.
Before spending a lot of money to recover your data, try the external drive on another computer. Maybe the connection USB port has gone bad on the original computer.

Beeping, not showing on computer

Its beeping because its damaged! sad to say but the beeping is an error code! the other downside is hard drives are hard to repair so you may need to buy a new one.

Hard drive dropped, now not working

The beeping/clicking sound usually means your hard drive isnt far from "death."
You should be backing up all your data and yes, you can find people who get info back from hard drives, but this is very expensive.

Maxtor 3200 beeps but doesn't work

The heads are riding on the platers. The drive is dead and not worth trying to fix. If there is data on it that you simply can not lose do a google search for "data recovery failed harddrive". The rule of thumb for a decent lad that can do this is price, if it costs less then 75$ per meg they probably are not that good.
