Hi Cyndolman
I presume you have tried all the obvious things like making sure your leads are all connected securely and the drive is powering up on plugging it into the wall so we'll move on with some other possibilities.

I am presuming you are using a windoze XP OS. Occasionally windoze can "lose" USB devices for apparently no reason. You might try powering down your PC, and then unplugging the device. Reboot the PC and then power up the device and once windoze has started fully, plug the device in to a USB port. I would suggest you try a different port to the original one you used as the IRQ may be conflicting with another device.

If this still does not produce a positive result, you may find that the drive letter assigned to the device is being used by something else [such as a virtual CD/DVD emulator like Daemon tools, or Alcohol]. If you have installed another device recently [like a camera or another plug-n-pray device, it may be using the same drive letter as the external drive. You can change the drive letters for devices via the control panel/administrative tools/computer management/disk management.

Finally, if still no joy, then ensure the drive is still operable by plugging into a different PC to eliminate any possibility of the drive being faulty.

Good luck and let me know the outcome.

I have just been given a Maxtor 750gb separate hard drive but it has no power adaptor. Would i be able to use an adaptor from my 500gb Maxtor separate hard drive or will i have to purchase a new power...

By SEPARATE I am taking that to mean an external drive and not an internal mounted drive. If IT IS external the same power supply should work fine as the drive motors are the same in both models. IF IT IS Internal then the question is whether your power supply is molex or ATA.

Everything seems to be fine, but

If you have tried it on several computers, then it seems there is something wrong with the HD or its cable. Are you able to use another USB cable with it to see if that fixes it? I'm assuming the power light is on, and you can hear the drive spinning?

I bought an external drive about 2 years back. It worked beautifully but close to a year after purchase stopped working. Being a technician, I removed the drive from the case and connected it inside my PC where it still works fine. The USB circuitry in the case had failed, not the drive, which was good for me.

External hard drive won't work with Mac

It needs to be formatted for macs.
I had this problem and with mine as well. (VOX is a horrible company)

One of these two processes should work but I forgot which I did.

Go to spotlight and search for disk utility. If the drive shows up on the left you can click on it then. Click the erase tab. select mac formatting and then click erase.

If it does not show up when you do this you will need to do the same process on a PC.

Maxtor One-Touch 4 750gb power light flashes and goes out straight away.

Try to remove the drive and connect it directly to another computer.
If still doesn't spin up then most likely the board has failed.
