I have a garmin nuvi 250 and the touch screen is not responsive. I tried to recalibrate it by turning it on and holding the power switch for 30 seconds and touching the screen and the calibration dot came up but i push the dots where they are and it just keeps bringing up the same pattern over and over again and never ends or says done. Before this all happened, i kept getting a pop up message saying to update the map but i didnt and now i have this problem. If i update and buy a new map will it fix the problem? What a piece of ****. I only had this thing about a year and it did this. aiats been setting now for about a year and im just now getting back to trying to figure it out.

Go to Garmin and download and install Garmin Express, Plug your GPS into your PC. The GPS should power on and Garmin Express should identify it and tell you of any updates. If there is a software update available, that should solve your problem.

SOURCE: Garmin Nuvi 350 Calibration Issue

Turn the unit off. Press and hold down the power button and keep holding it. You will see the screen light up and it will say "pre-boot mode". Keep holding down the power key. It will then say "booting". Keep holding the power button down. You'll then come to the calibation screen. Select the dots and you'll be back in business.

If 1/3 of the screen is grey, this is an indication that the LCD display is defective and needs to be replaced. This can happen if the unit has been dropped.

Try a Master Reset:

Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings. But who cares if you have problems, right?

  1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
  2. Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
  3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON
  4. Release the power button when the device powers ON
    • You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
  5. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
  6. Touch Yes
The device will automatically reset. Follow the on screen prompts then place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.

Touch screen not responding at all. Garmin powers up okay.

This is Garmin's response to me after having the same problem on a 2 year old Nuvi 650: We are no longer replacing or repairing this model unit. However, let me give you some steps to try to calibrate the screen of your unit. The following 'Fix' did not work. I won't be buying another Garmin.
To recalibrate the touchscreen on your nuvi 600 series device please follow the steps below:

  1. Plug the device into the computer via USB data cable
  2. Double click My Computer (Mac Users can skip this step)
  3. Double Click the Garmin or nuvi drive
  4. Double click the Garmin folder
  5. Delete the GUPDATE.GCD file (if this file is not on the device please skip to the next step)
  6. Unplug the GPS device from the computer
  7. Power the device off
  8. Press and hold the Power button
  9. After a short period a screen should appear that says Touch Dot
  10. Release the Power button
  11. Touch the dots as they move around the screen.

Your touchscreen should now be recalibrated.

If the screen is still not responding, then the unit will need to be replaced with a new unit at this time.

Touch screen not responsive Garmin 680

The cable to the touch sensitive part of the screen may have come loose (easily happens if knocked).

Try taking the unit apart (with care and the right type of screwdriver) and reseating the connector cable.

Once you've done this you may need to recalibrate the screen. Holding the power switch down will get you to the reboot / recalibrate screen.

But of course this will probably invalidate your warranty so beware.
