Try this:

Your valve may not have the winter notch but it's layout will be the same.

Hayward vari flo valve

Does it filter? Does the pump have full prime? I'm not clear about how when the valve is put in the backwash position nothing happens.

Hayward sand filter

Reference your pressure gauge as the 12:00 position. Going clockwise-
12:00 is Filter, normal running position
2:00 is Waste, water goes from pool and exits the waste line, bypassing filter.
4:00 is Closed, used only when servicing equipment
6:00 is Backwash, reverses water through the filter and goes out the waste line.
8:00 is Recirculate, water bypasses filter and returns to pool.
10:00 is Rinse, water goes through filter and exits to waste line, used briefly after backwashing to clear sediment from filter.
Note that the "pointer," not the handle that you grab, indicates which setting you are on.

Installing vari flo top mount valve on hayward filter. Should the the two C clamps come together tightly when install is complete or should there be a gap on the ends? Example (-) vs ()

There is a gap at the ends; about 3/16 to 1/4" give or take. Just hand tighten them and if the valve leaks a little tighten them a little more at a time to avoid splitting the clamps by overtightening.

I have a brand new Hayward RS 2sp pump, new DE6020 filter and a new Hayward Vari-flo Valve / 6 positions. When I run the pump at low speed no water goes thru the waste line. When I run it at High speed,...

The spider gasket inside the 6-position valve is probably leaking. Take the model number of the valve to a local pool store and they can order a replacement. You will also need a special sealant to install the new gasket.

No suction from hayward variflow pro series sand filter

Try these tips. I am guessing that one of these is the reason that your pool filter is not working properly. If you try these suggestions and they don't work, let me know and I will trouble shoot with you again.
1. Check skimmer and pump strainer baskets for debris.
2. Check for restrictions in intake and discharge lines.
3. Check for air leak in intake line (indicated by bubbles returning to pool.
4. Backwash your filter.
5. Be sure Vari-Flo valve is set on “Filter” position.

Hayward vari flo valve

If the spider gasket in the vari-flo valve is no good, you will usually notice one of two problems.

1. Water leaking out backwash port while filter is operating.
2. Valve positions are really difficult to change.

The way to check this is if you are able to move one or two of the "spokes" in the gasket freely(out of the track it sits in) once the top of the valve is removed.

If so you need to replace. The gasket is usually held in with a silicone sealant. Once you remove the old gasket. You will need to scrape any remaining rubber from the track it sits in. I've found that a brass brush from a pluming supply store or home depot along with a flat head screwdriver is usually enough to do the removal.
I always used Permatex Blue RTV sealant on all valve jobs. It can be found at any auto parts store or sometimes Walmart. Follow the instructions for curing. Once cured the gasket is good as new.

Control Valve handle wont stay in position

The valve should be about $100. We sell it for 90 something. You can rebuild them with gaskets and the spring. There should be a model number on yours, care to post it? Something like SP711, SP714, etc.
