It is very possible that because you have another hp printer active with that computer, and the software from the new hp printer may be conflicting with the software already installed into that computer, and becuase of that, the computer automatically drops the new installation of the software from the new printer, just like it never happened, in almost any case, you will have to uninstall the whole software program from the other printer already installed into that computer, and install the new software into your computer, if that still doesnt work, then your new printers software, the new printer, or both are not compatable with your computer
Well, I believe that Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft, so if you are trying to make a printer work with a form of Windows, I would recommend upgrading to Windows 7. Drivers seem to be more friendly to this operating system than XP was even when XP was the current operating system of choice.
So, I would spend the money for upgrading to Windows 7, as long as your computer can accomodate the hardware system requirements for Windows 7.
Good luck on this.

Unfortunately, this desktop is old, and not suitable for an upgrade to Windows 7 or even Vista.
I found a post on an online forum which helped me. I had to first search for registry entries for my PSC 1300 series using various search terms until I was pretty sure I'd found each one and deleted it. Then I entered a command in the run box (can't find my notes, so can't write it now) to make hidden devices show. Then I was able to see it in the Device Manager (the corruptly-installed printer), and delete it. Then when I extracted the downloaded software to my PC, I typed in the run box %temp% to show all the temp files, and found the most recent one whose folder started with 7s, and the software was there. The only real problem was, I could then sort of extract the drivers, enough to successfully install the printer, but the scanning software, copying software, etc, just wouldn't install still. I'm thinking it may be a problem with installation, so I downloaded the Windows Installer package and reinstalled it. I still am having trouble installing .msi files. Oh well, I'm halfway there. Thanks for trying to help.
I did think of that, and moved my HP and Hewlett Packard folders from their original location to temporary folders on my desktop. Since my installing has not been very lucky, and I don't have the disk for the other printer, I didn't want to uninstall it. So that, coupled with registry cleaning, device manager setting so that I could see hidden devices, therefore actually able to delete the poorly-installed printer, and a forum user saying he was able to find the downloaded installation package files for the printer in a folder whose name began with 7s, and I was able to get the printer installed. Unfortunately, I couldn't install it the nice package way, where the scanning and copying software got installed too, and I am still having trouble with getting that installed. But at least I can print to it. Part way there.... I think it's a problem that my computer maybe has installing difficulty, sometimes. Apparently with .msi files. Thanks for trying to help me, I really appreciate it.
